About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The epic first instalment in the thrilling War of the Roses series, perfect for fans of Game of Thrones, Bernard Cornwell and Wolf Hall.

King Henry V - the great Lion of England - is dead.

It's up to his son to take the throne, but frail in body and mind, he is dependent on his supporters to run his kingdom.

Richard, Duke of York, believes that without a strong king England will fall.

And as the threat from France grows, and rebellion on home soil spreads, his fears seem justified.

Who can save the throne?

Who will defend the kingdom?

Great voice characterisation

Even though I knew that liberties were taken with the story, it was a great tale.

Historically educational, fast paced storyline and great character development

Although not as enthralling and epic as Iggluden’s Khan series, this first book has still been as fast paced and capturing as a historical fiction can be for this time period. He uses interesting characters that lead you into the story and this over plays the doldrums of the political fighting of the time. Really enjoyed this first book and looking forward to finishing the series.

A little bit of a let down

It’s certainly not a bad story but it really doesn’t explain particularly well the characters that led to the situation of the war of the roses.
I got the book because I’m always a little bit confused about the families and how the conflict came about. Because there is so much repetition of names and titles it does make it hard in this part of history to understand who’s who. I would’ve liked the book a lot more if it had helped me gain this understanding.
The narrator was really good . The writing style was very good I just feel a little let down by the content.
