About this listen
Harry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a reclusive intellectual for whom life holds no joy. He struggles to reconcile the wild, primeval wolf and the rational man within himself without surrendering to the bourgeois values he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman who is his opposite, the carefree and elusive Hermine.
With its blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, Steppenwolf, Hesse' best-known and most autobiographical work, originally published in English in 1929, continues to speak to our souls as a classic of modern literature.

Superb and exquisite.
A superb and exquisite parable of life and mankind’s quest for truth and the eternal unchanging.

I wolfed it down!
An epochal novel, brilliantly read. Riveting. Insightful. A surreal masterpiece. I’ve waited far too long for this book.

It's bigbrain time
An interesting and introspective listen, similar thematically to The Glass Bead Game but equally unique.

Amazing.
An equisite narration of an equally perfect book. If you're a MGTOW it's a must read.

Impressive. Impacting. Beautiful
This is such a powerful book, and the narration feels true to the character. A blend of beauty and madness. The concepts and language are brain intensive, and yet I found it such a beautifully spiritual, emotional, and healing book. A great read for anyone struggling find happiness through their own intellectualising.

Life's lessons
life's lessons in unusual settings enclosed. i recognise the author's torment with Lutheran theology in this book. The headache of making meaning rather than enjoying life- a torment not just limited to the Lutherans

Pretentious
The first third drew me in and I was looking forward to hearing more. The ensuing love orgy and drug fuelled kaleidoscope was painful to get through. Hesse loved the sound of his own voice and it became a boring, pretentious drag to complete.

Very dated story and delivery
the story of a conservative intellectual who is perpetually critical of "modern" society and his life, he is another of those archetypal drinking, smoking, miserable men who seemed to inspire the 60s hippie rebellion. he begins to experience new things which he initially hated such as jazz and dancing , and his mind is blown. it's a very dated story now, it's critique of the new seems ridiculous these days where we accept the speed of the new as a normal part of life. The narration is also gruff, stilted and staccato, and in total this was almost unbearably tedious. I loved Siddhartha by the same author, which I highly recommend. I can almost not beleive it's the same writer.

Antiquated self absorbed racist 🐂 shit
Could not finish it. worse than Hemingway's self absorbed megalomaniacal drivel that we are told is a classic writing.
