About this listen

A Sunday Times and New York Times Bestseller!

Take a ringside seat in the high-stakes world of international politics...

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in. Secretary of State, Ellen Adams, is determined to do her duty for her country. But she is about to face a horrifying international threat...

A young foreign service officer has received a baffling text from an anonymous source. Too late, she realizes it was a hastily coded warning. Then a series of bus bombs devastate Europe, heralding the rise of a new rogue terrorist organization who will stop at nothing in their efforts to develop their own nuclear arsenal.

As Ellen unravels the damaging effects of the former presidency on international politics, she must also contemplate the unthinkable: that the last president of the United States was more than just an ineffectual leader. Was he also a traitor to his country?

State of Terror is a compelling and critically acclaimed international political thriller co written by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th secretary of state, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist.

Critic Reviews

"A rip-roaring, brilliant page-turner, but it’s also timely, cheeky, important and wonderfully, courageously provocative. What great fun!" (James Patterson)

"Clinton and Penny are each a force on their own - put together they are unstoppable." (Karin Slaughter)

"Smart and fast and twisty, State of Terror is a dazzlingly unpredictable political thriller. I loved it." (Kathy Reichs)

Enjoyable

A fast paced thriller with a sound plot and relatable characters. Nice nods to Louise Penny’s three pines characters. Narrator was solid. Give it a go!

A must read

This book is extremely well written. Had my attention from the start. Excellent narration. Recommend to anyone interested in world politics. Makes you question everything about what actually goes on behind the scenes and had to ask myself did Clinton tell us anything or was it all fiction?

Brilliant

Fabulous book and great resolution. Highly recommend especially if you follow American politics, but equally enjoyable of you don't.

Do not underestimate

This is a surprise to be able to me, but I loved this book.
But it should not have been.
Clever and edge of seat reading, filled with twists and turns and an uneasy building of anticipation of disaster.
I loved the political asides and insight into the machinations of government
But the story alone was enough to keep me riveted
The combination of Penny and Clinton produced a classic political thriller for the modern age
More please

Horrifyingly good

The best and worst of democracy and politics. As much as it horrified it also fascinated.

Great story, lacklustre narration

Being a lover of Louise Penny’s Gamache series I really enjoyed this book - started off a little slow (as does her other works) but builds up quickly and leaves you wanting more. Great plot and Hilary Clinton’s insider insights really added a huge amount of details to the story.

The narrator however was a bit 2D. Every character sounded the same - variations in touch/tone/accent would have differentiated the character but as it was I couldn’t tell who was speaking unless it was written into the story. Vague (bad) attempts were made at foreign accents - probably best not to have bothered at all if you’re not even going to try to get them right.

Great book overall though and if rumours of a movie are true then I’m looking forward to seeing it

average

I struggled to keep listening. The characters were not entriging and phrases repeated over and over.

Completely unbelievable

Hard to get into because the plot is just so far fetched. Goes from bad to worse.

The narrator

While the story was good the narration left a lot to be desired, which someday characters of different nationalities the narrator was always the same!!!!!! Have listened to many books but many have been much better!!!!!!
