About this listen
A Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick
‘Alix E. Harrow is an exceptional, undeniable talent’ - Olivie Blake, author of The Atlas Six
Step into Starling House – if you dare. Alix E. Harrow reimagines Beauty and the Beast in this gorgeously modern Gothic fantasy, perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab and Naomi Novik.
No one in Eden remembers when Starling House was built. But everyone agrees that it’s best to let the house – and its last, lonely heir – go to rot.
Starling House is uncanny and ugly and fully of secrets, just like its heir. Opal knows better than to mess with haunted houses or brooding men, but it might be a chance to get her brother out of Eden. It feels dangerously like something she’s never had: a home.
But Opal isn’t the only one interested in the house, or the horrors and wonders that lie beneath it. If Opal wants a home, she’ll have to fight for it. She’ll have to dig up her family’s ugly history and let herself dream of a better future. She’ll have to go down, down into Underland, and claw her way back to the light . . .
This is a romantic and spellbinding Gothic fairytale from Hugo, Nebula and Locus Award-shortlisted Alix E. Harrow.
'Starling House is Alix E. Harrow’s greatest work yet' - Ava Reid, author of A Study in Drowning
‘Gorgeous, poignant, and honest – an unforgettable read’ - Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter

Prickly modern Gothic romance at its best
I love a good sentient house story. This one is satisfyingly Gothic & full of thorns & the characters are all just as imperfect & prickly & relatable.

A Fun Read
Who can resist a haunted house, ghost tales and a town with a past? Lovely, vivid visuals too. A little cheesy toward the end for my taste, but came back around with a satisfying ending. Didn't love the choice of narrator; I think the main character was meant to be gritty, but instead sounded a bit waspy, so some parts didn't completely sell. Still, a fun read.

Not my usual read
I loved the characters in this book. A vivid story that I could picture as the narrator was telling it. Not my normal choice, but loved it.

Powerful & emotional
Another masterpiece by Alix Harrow, performed magnificently by Natalie Naudus. It’s like a combination of A Spindle Splintered and The Once And Future Witches.

Engrossing dark gothic mystery
A rotting gothic mansion - tick.
It's broody custodian - tick.
A small town full of secrets and monsters. Some human, some not - tick tick tick.
I had been anticipating this books release since I read the pre-release synopsis. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me engaged and engrossed into the wee hours of the night.

Addictive
Listened to this book in 3 days staying up late listening when I should’ve been at work, the narrator is a bit boring. She does a good job, but when she is doing Arthur part, it’s really hard to differentiate between Arthur and Opal so you get a little confused at the start as to what is going on otherwise it was pretty bloody good.

I loved Alix E Harrows previous books. This did not disappoint. Such an enthralling tale with fantastic characters, that you can't help routing for. Definitely recommend if you like fantasy novels, with a big slice of reality.
