About this listen

Magic. Steel. Blood. Victory.

The Earth’s navy is left drifting among the stars as Nyctus ships swarm, their purpose unknown as they continue their advance, burning one system after another. Humanity's extinction seems inevitable. But on one of the forgotten worlds, a boy is left behind, and he holds a talent unlike anything the galaxy has ever known.

Thorn Stellers is a mage, trained to lead and fight. With a renegade division of warriors at his side, and with weapons far different from those of old Earth, Thorn has a chance at standing up to humanity's enemies. For these mage-soldiers, armed with power that had once been thought the stuff of legend, the outcome is no longer certain.

Each Starcaster has a talent - except for Thorn, who has many. With his childhood companion Kira Wixcombe, he’ll confront a threat from beyond the stars, meeting them in the darkness with a light born of magic...and a lust for revenge.

Is his power enough? Or is Earth a forgotten memory, lost forever to history?

Missing magic

Shallow characterisations + spacey stuff is your typical 50’s space fiction. Add a whiff of Ender’s Game and a liberal dose of magic and you could expect a good time but somehow the thing never ignites and so never leaves the launch pad.

I’m blaming our hero - he’s too good to be believable and gets there with no real trial by fire even though the writer tried real hard to light one. Had he done a G R R Martin and killed off Kira then Thorne may well have gotten the fire in the belly that was needed.

Couldn't get enough

I found this after listening to Wayward Galaxy by J.N. Chaney, and have listened to all books and seriously couldn't get enough.
It has action, adventure, sci-fi, magic, romance, originality and will get your emotions going at times, in a really good way!
The narration is incredible and R.C. Bray does an amazing job with distinct character voices!

Came home strong at least

I found this hard to get through. Started off ok but the whole basic training section was poor. It seemed to jump around in bits and didn’t flow well. The whole concept used for the basic training was stupid - was like The Undying Mercenary series but without the Undying bit.

It would’ve been good to have a bit more of an explanation of the background of starcasters and their magic.

I was wondering whether I had fallen asleep through a section or something.

The end was pretty good but seemed hollow. Won’t be getting the rest of the series.

Interesting

Not bad, I did enjoy it. Some issues I noted : way overpowered hero, leaning too much into training cliches, too little conflict and too much smooth sailing.

Good points: well written and excellent narration.e

Great read in the end

Initially struggled with it but glad I kept going with the story. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to grabbing the next one in the series.
Hints of Darth Bane but also old school Skylark / DuQuesne series!!

Magic in the stars

I came to this book via FB ads, which promised magic in the stars as if that hadn't happened before - it has. The boot camp magery was an interesting twist, but if boot camps are indoctrination of the grunt, this described a leisurely education.
There are no immediate dire consequences, and then there is genocide. An interesting listen to hear the connection between the two.
No need to hurry. The war will wait while you go back to school.

Look out squids.

A rollicking space opera. A central character with tortured memories and mind powers, a lady he thinks a lot of and an alien enemy that look like squids that he happens to dislike intensely. What more could you ask fo.

Barely got through it.

Somehow the main character can't be any more perfect after learning nothing from obscenely aggressive Navy training/bullying.
It's an interesting plot but poor execution imho.
