About this listen
The twenty-eighth book in the number one bestselling Alan Banks crime series - by the master of the police procedural.
Late November, 1980. Student Nick Hartley returns from a lecture to find his house full of police officers. As he discovers that his ex-girlfriend has been found murdered in a nearby park, and her new boyfriend is missing, he realises two things in quick succession: he is undoubtedly a suspect as he has no convincing alibi, and he has own suspicions as to what might have happened...
Late November 2019. An dig near Scotch Corner unearths a skeleton that turns out to be far more recent than the Roman remains the archaeologist is looking for. Detective Superintendent Alan Banks and his team are called in and, as an investigation into the find begins, the past and the present meet with devastating consequences.

Interesting
The techniques Robinson uses for this DCI Banks mystery is different from his other novels and I really wondered whether this was really a Banks mystery when it opened with what seemed to be a failed love affair between a couple of university students set in the 1980s. The dual story lines was initially confusing. The first is narrated by Nick Hartley whose ex-girlfriend is murdered, and the other used the third person traditional storytelling in the present time with Banks pursuing an investigation into the skeleton of an older man discovered during an archaeological dig.
However, Robinson is a master story teller and the two plots eventually come together in a seamless way and the result is satisfying, if not particularly surprising if you follow the clues along the way.

Wish the ending had lasted longer
Enjoyed the overall story and the way the past and present were woven together. Just felt disappointed that we didn’t know the end fate of those responsible. Sad that this will be the last in this series due to the passing of Peter Robinson 🙏

Thank you, Peter
I listened to all the Banks books throughout last year. It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I loved listening to Simon's voice, his particular intonations and rhythm. And I loved all the little details Peter was putting in the story, making it really alive. The music, the food, drinks, small gestures characters make... I loved the stories.
Peter died when I had just a couple of books left. It felt like loosing a friend. Dear Peter, thank you for creating this world of crime puzzles and flawed, yet lovely people solving them. Rest in peace, dear friend
