About this listen

Presented by James Patterson's new children's imprint, this deliciously creepy horror novel has a storyline inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion.

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns will make this dazzling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Critic Reviews

"Audrey Rose Wadsworth prefers breeches to ball gowns, autopsies to afternoon tea, and scalpels to knitting needles. Though her father, Lord Edmund, has forbidden it, Audrey covertly studies forensic medicine...while 'the Ripper' remains two steps ahead, lurking where Audrey least expects...." ( Booklist)
"This is a book that will keep you up at night and haunt you during the day." (Beth Revis, author of the New York Times best-selling series Across the Universe)
"Kerri Maniscalco paints a picture of nineteenth-century London that lives and breathes in wonderfully sinister fashion. You won't want to put this book down." (Renee Ahdieh, author of the New York Times best seller The Wrath and the Dawn)

A twisted tale

I love a good twisted tale / retelling. This was well thought out & a fun, puzzling Jack the Ripper story with a Sherlock Holmes feel & more science than I thought I’d like, but it was done well!

An enjoyable read

I'll be perfectly honest, this is the first murder mystery book I've read, and I loved it. It had everything I wanted and more. We have Audrey Rose, a smart and fearless female lead and devilishly charming self-assured Thomas Cresswell, both whom study under Audrey Rose's Uncle in forensic science. Together they seek answers to the bloody murders of Jack the Ripper that's been plaguing the streets. Though it was easy to figure out the mystery, I was still in-deep with the characters that it was worth the 4 stars. Romance, forensic science, set in the Victorian Era and bloody murders... what else can you want?

A must read, historically researched novel

I flew through this book everything from characters to plot was extremely well written. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator and looking forward to reading or listening to the rest of the series. This is the first audiobook not full cast that I love!!! Nicola Barber did an amazing job narrating. Full review will be posted on my blog Princess-paperback.blogspot.com.au

Excellent Book and Narration

When I chose to get this book I was unsure what I would think of it. I have read a lot of material on Jack The Ripper and I love Victorian England, specifically London. This was a brave book to write.
It has turned out to be one of the best reads I have had this year, I loved it that much I will be purchasing a hardcopy for my bookshelves.
If you are unsure about this book just get it, you will not be disappointed.

A good book, but not my favourite

I really liked the gothic feel of this book and some of the scenes were wonderfully creepy. The overall plot was entertaining and engaging, and the audiobook narrator did a great job of building atmosphere and anticipation. So much so that I was just lying in bed listening to the audiobook, which I never do. However I was a little disappointed by the mystery aspect, I had figured out who Jack the Ripper was from about half-way through.

I was a bit hit or miss with the characters as well. I really liked the spunkiness of Audrey and I liked her brother. However, I could never decide whether or not I liked Thomas, the love interest. At times I thought he was nice and charming but at other times he could be pretty insufferable.

Overall a very entertaining and fast paced book but I just wish the mystery was a little more surprising.

Brilliant

Absolutely loved this book, and the series that followed.
Beautifully narrated, Barber nailed every accent and spoke so clearly, I always knew which character was speaking.

okish

The story line was okish, however, although the narrator has a pleasant voice, I found her very annoying when she was reading the males parts in the story, it ruined the story and I only finished it because I paid for it. lol
