About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

He thought he could set her on a better path. But they might both wander astray....

Sir Gareth Ludlow never truly recovered from the death of his fiancée. Years later, a chance encounter with Amanda, a young and devastatingly pretty runaway, inspires him to try to do the right thing and to set her on a path towards a good life.

But Sir Gareth has been neck-deep in a life of debauchery and hedonism ever since his fiancée's death, and Amanda's startlingly lively imagination proves to be more than he'd bargained for. As they both become increasingly entangled in Sir Gareth's scheme, it seems more and more difficult for either of them to lead the life they should....

A witty and delightful historical novel, Sprig Muslin shows why Georgette Heyer has such a huge and devoted readership to this day.

Engaging plot

Engaging plot featuring a good range of characters. Read in a pleasant voice, although a little hard to distinguish between characters at times.

Not well read

Good story but marred by the reader mispronouncing quite a number of words. The producer should have helped her. Poor work.

Sprig Muslin

I am a huge fan of Georgette Heyer however am at a loss to understand why this book has now been re issued with a new narrator who although she has a pleasant voice by no means measures up to the previous reader. A mystery.

It was a slow start but we'll worth it for the for the mayhem and misunderstandings . All resolved by the end of course

Poor narration

This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books so it was disappointing that, like many of the latest Penguin releases of her work, the narrator was so amateurish. The usual list of things wrong apply. Poor reading ability, mispronounced words and an annoying habit of breathing in the middle of sentences. I think I will wait until Penguin rerelease the older audio versions before buying any more.

Lovely story but the narrator is miscast

The frequent mispronunciations annoy me far more than the flat vowels but both at once are an annoying distraction. This is a frequent problem with these Penguin versions.

The narrator didn't seem to have read the text before recording

The narrator pauses in the middle.... of phrases, PUTS emphasis on odd words, and mispronunces others. I suspect she hasn't read and understood the text enough before recording. I find myself focusing on the narration rather than the story.

Charming and amusing romance

Perhaps not as dramatic as others of her stories, Sprig Muslin still has the power to charm with a beguiling account of the adventures of a headstrong girl and a gentleman who seeks to protect her from the consequences of her Ill-judged campaign to force her grandfather to consent to her marriage with her childhood sweetheart who is unfortunately a younger son. Sir Gareth Ludlow encounters some challenging circumstances in his attempts to protect Amanda but overcomes these with perseverance and good humor despite a number of setbacks.
I was disappointed by the number of mispronunciations in this reading which jarred my attention away from the story. Additionally, the pronunciation of many vowels was a major distraction. The flatness of a strong regional accent was jarring coming from the mouths of such upper class characters who would also not have pronounced the g in words ending with ing. Puss is a shortening of pussy cat, not something which oozes from infected wounds. I wonder why there was not a little coaching regarding these issues because otherwise Amelia Donkor gave a lively reading.

Poor narration

One of my favourite Georgette Heyer’s books, but this reading is spoilt by mispronounced words and vowels which distract from the engaging story. Very disappointing.

Great story with charming characters

The novel remains a classic but the narration didn’t live up to it. Strange pronunciations of short, every-day words disrupt the continuity of the narration. Listeners should look for another version.
