A great start into a new setting
A lot of great character and world building, but spends maybe a bit too long on family drama before finally getting to the sci-fi action. That said, the early cutaway scenes to the hidden threat are genuinely chilling. I suspect this will be an even better read once more of the series is available.

Great introduction to a new universe
A very slow burn to start with, introducing the characters, history and tech of the near future. There are some frightening scenes sprinkled throughout to help build the tension. Once the action does start, it is non stop and fantastic.
The performance was a little off-putting to begin with but I didn't mind after a few hours.
The story is definitely just an introduction, I wouldn't bother if you were not considering buying the follow up books.
