About this listen

This program is read by the author, comedian and severe dyslexic Phil Hanley, who reveals his unlikely path to success in a story that is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

When Phil Hanley was in first grade, he realized something that would forever set him apart from his peers: he couldn’t read. His teachers were ill-equipped to assist him, and he slipped through the school’s cracks, year by year falling further and further behind his friends. Finally, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disability that would shape the rest of his life.

Unable to pursue college or a traditional job, Phil was thrust into a life defined by unconventional twists, including a stint as a runway model in Europe. Eventually, he found himself on a stage with a microphone, a spotlight, and five minutes of jokes. Unlike so many previous pursuits, stand-up felt right to Phil, and he soon discovered that the more he worked at it, the more he got out of it—a realization that, he compellingly argues, saved his life. Spellbound is a story of humor and also of struggle and heartbreak, of constantly living in a world that sees things differently than you do, and of triumph over adversity.

Hanley tells us that dyslexia can be a huge challenge, but it doesn’t spell certain condemnation (and neither can he). Just the opposite: dyslexia has been more than a blessing in his life—it’s been his North Star.

Critic Reviews

A Lit Hub Most Anticipated Book of 2025

“Brilliant, funny, poignant, raw, honest, and full of heart, Phil Hanley’s Spellbound is the voice of a movement. He shares wisdom about what it's like to be dyslexic, but most importantly, he sets the record straight on what is right with the dyslexic mind and how we can all find our path and voice in the world.”—David Flink, Founder of Eye to Eye and CNN Hero

"From the backroads of Canada to the runways of Milan, Phil has a great story. I’m sure there are unruly Canadians and sarcastic Deadheads, but he’s got to be the only one that’s both."—Colin Quinn, comedian

"Spellbound is an achievement of authentic and talented storytelling. Hanley delivers validating, relatable and humorous anecdotes for the millions of people who have dyslexia and sends messages of resilience, acceptance and ultimately, celebration. I personally appreciate this book, not only as a therapist, but also as a parent who is always looking for positive and successful stories to share with my dyslexic son."—Roberto Olivardia, Ph.D., Clinical Psychologist and Lecturer, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

An excellent read

I downloaded this as soon as I read an interview piece with the author on New York Times the other day. Being in Australia, I hadn’t heard of Phil but I absolutely love a good autobiography and this sounded fascinating.

It was a very compelling listen and I pretty much binge listened. I really appreciate memoirs where the author is very honest, vulnerable and shares fascinating life stories, and this had it all. Dyslexia is so common and there is a lot more awareness now but this is the first time I have read a bio by someone who has shared about it in such detail and I can imagine it will be so valuable to children and others (Henry Winkler’s autobiography is fantastic/highly recommended and he touched on his experiences on it to some extent). And I also believe that sharing one’s difficulties as a child/growing up (whether it relates to teachers, peers or family) and how one has grown and risen from them is so very potential relatable and inspiring as part of the human experience.

Asides from this, there were many entertaining tales from his amazing times in Milan, London and beyond as a high fashion male model (among guys he shared very little in common), giving rare peeks into that world, and of course then working his way up the difficult road from scratch in Canada and New York/beyonc as a comedian.

All in all, a big thanks to Phil for sharing and reading his story. I’m quite amazed to be the first Audible reviewer for this and trust that many others will be enriched by this book.

Laughed, and cried

Damn Phil.

I have loved your comedy. This book hit harder than I was expecting. Thanks for sharing the humour, the pain and what it looks like to push through adversity.
Reading and writing came easy for me. (I would also get punished for grades below A so the motivation was high). It still kill me when kids in my classes were brushed off, punished or patronised for not following lessons. I hated seeing that. And would always help them when I could. I got good at helping other kids understand things better by breaking it down for them and finding where they were stuck. I hated the way that kids who didn’t have good grades were considered dumb. Even as a kid I could see they were smart in others ways.

Also fell in love with your mum and wish more kids had a mumma Hanley. A little jealous tbh
