Judgment of the Witch
The Carolinas, 1699: The citizens of Fount Royal believe a witch has cursed their town with inexplicable tragedies - and they demand that beautiful widow Rachel Howarth be tried and executed for witchcraft. Presiding over the trial is traveling magistrate Issac Woodward, aided by his astute young clerk, Matthew Corbett. Believing in Rachel's innocence, Matthew will soon confront the true evil at work in Fount Royal....
Evil Unveiled
After hearing damning testimony, magistrate Woodward sentences the accused witch to death by burning. Desperate to exonerate the woman he has come to love, Matthew begins his own investigation among the townspeople. Piecing together the truth, he has no choice but to vanquish a force more malevolent than witchcraft in order to save his beloved Rachel - and free Fount Royal from the menace claiming innocent lives.

Historical Ripping Yarns
Mathew Corbett Series
Author : Robert McCammon is from Birmingham Alabama.
These are what I call historical "ripping yarns" - the series , starts with Speaks the Nightbird.
The books are historical fiction mystery, danger everywhere, great detailed research describes London & New York in the period 1699 - 1703, the first book is set in the Carolinas, full of violence mayhem, humour, dastardly characters, just enough romance, and great plots .... all the good stuff, and you get the most outstanding narration by Edoardo Ballerini
Matthew goes from humble clerk to "problem solver".
I liked this series so much I bought the first 2 in print form to share with non-audiophile friends, all who have read the first go on to read them all. The last one is expected later this year. I have listened to most of these twice. Of my audio library of over 500 since 2011 this is my most recommended books.
I joined Audible in 2011, discovered this book in one of the early sales, I think I paid $7.99. I never stop recommending, watching youtube interviews with the author. Most are very long, which is great.
Speaks the Nightbird (what a title !) is actually 2 books
1) The Judgment of the Witch
2) Evil Unveiled
I read the first 3, then each year had to wait for the next, whereas now you can have 7, two remain for those of you already into Matthew and the woman he loves Berry Grigsby, The King of Shadows is out this year, the penultimate in the series.
I highly recommend you join the Matthew Corbett & Eduardo Ballerini world.
