Auch hatte die Republik hier nicht, wie in Gallien und in Illyricum, sich darauf beschränkt, die Küsten des italischen Meeres zu unterwerfen, vielmehr gleich von Anfang an nach dem Vorgang der Barkiden die Eroberung der ganzen Halbinsel in das Auge gefasst.
Theodor Mommsen erhielt als erster Deutscher 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
