About this listen
In this stunning novel about judgment, courage, heartbreak, and change, author Silas House wrestles with the limits of belief and the infinite ways to love.
In the aftermath of a flood that washes away much of a small Tennessee town, evangelical preacher Asher Sharp offers shelter to two gay men. In doing so, he starts to see his life anew - and risks losing everything: his wife, locked into her religious prejudices; his congregation, which shuns Asher after he delivers a passionate sermon in defense of tolerance; and his young son, Justin, caught in the middle of what turns into a bitter custody battle.
With no way out but ahead, Asher takes Justin and flees to Key West, where he hopes to find his brother, Luke, whom he'd turned against years ago after Luke came out. And it is there, at the southernmost point of the country, that Asher and Justin discover a new way of thinking about the world, and a new way of understanding love.
Southernmost is a tender and affecting book, a meditation on love and its consequences.

Moving: a flawed pastor’s redemption on the run
A flood in a small Tennessee town makes local pastor Asher Sharp reevaluate his judgemental fire-and-brimstone attitude to a gay couple who live locally. Asher has always felt guilty about siding with his mother against his gay, now-estranged brother, Luke, and Asher feels it’s time for change. This puts him on a collision course with his congregation and his hard-nosed wife who uses the court system to gain the lion’s share of custody of their sensitive son, Justin. In desperation, Asher kidnaps Justin and they flee to Key West at the very south of Florida, the last known whereabouts of Luke. There they meet two kind women who give Asher and Justin housing and work. It’s an idyllic but unsustainable setting and Asher knows he will need the strength to do what’s right.
I was so conflicted by this amazing story. While I utterly sympathised with Asher’s predicament, I couldn’t condone the kidnapping or the lack of opportunities Justin had while living on the run—it was ultimately a selfish act which negatively affected many people. The writing was beautiful but what I loved most were Justin’s quiet, deep thoughts and watching the flawed Asher become a better, more open man. 🎧 Voice actor Charlie Thurston is a favourite narrator, he’s always perfect for sensitive, thoughtful stories like this.
