Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn-out cliche like that....

Great book
I am very glad I decided on a whim to read this book. I couldn't stop listening to it. Classic crime novel and the narration was excellent.

Worth a go
This was a great story with enough going on to keep you interested. Although found it a little long Narration fine. I did enjoy.

Worth persevering!
This took a while to grab me - it was rather long winded at times. However, by the end I was sorry it had ended. Will definitely search for the next in the series.

Good story beautifully narrated

Loved every minute
I really enjoyed the storyline, the twists and turns and the way the plot developed. While I may have guessed a few of the developments it didn't take away from the plot for me, because I was enjoying the characters and how they were dealing with and engaging in some of the social themes included. I also enjoyed the way the story tried to be inclusive of differences. Definitely goes on my re-read list!

Sleepless
Oh what a wicked web we weave! And a web of wickedness it is. The smooth velvety voice of the narrator emphasises each character without being too pretentious but leaves you with a visual impression that can either subtle or a little jagged around the edges. It is a book that needs endurance however the reward is not just in the final chapters but throughout all the chapters.

Very police procedural, maybe a bit long.
Although very technical the characters came to life and developed well (esp the main one through whose eyes most is seen).
