Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn-out cliche like that....

Excellent characterisation
The characters are well developed and their personalities enrich the plot. Plot is tight and does not lag.

Intricate investigating
This murder-mystery is a beautiful, intricate tapestry unpacking the thinking and personalities behind the scenes. If you’re looking for a simple read, this is not it. If you live the deep dive into teamwork, politics and personalities, then clear your calandra, grab a drink and sit back for a very deliberate unravelling.

Brilliant characters and storyline
Just finished this book. It was an 'in between book' whilst waiting for my monthly credit to come through so was included in my membership. What a brilliant and deliciously long listen. I really enjoyed being included in the very detailed police investigation and the build up of all the characters. The story was clever and intelligent, as were the characters. What a bonus to find this in the included list ! Will have to look for more books now by this author and narrator who did an amazing job.
Highly recommend this one.

So much detail … another brilliant book!!
This is the second book I have listened to by this author. FANTASTIC!! Lots of good characters … & the narrator was just brilliant. Definitely going to be looking for more of these .. straight away!

Great book
I am very glad I decided on a whim to read this book. I couldn't stop listening to it. Classic crime novel and the narration was excellent.

This was a great story with enough going on to keep you interested. Although found it a little long Narration fine. I did enjoy.

Worth persevering!
This took a while to grab me - it was rather long winded at times. However, by the end I was sorry it had ended. Will definitely search for the next in the series.

Loved every minute
I really enjoyed the storyline, the twists and turns and the way the plot developed. While I may have guessed a few of the developments it didn't take away from the plot for me, because I was enjoying the characters and how they were dealing with and engaging in some of the social themes included. I also enjoyed the way the story tried to be inclusive of differences. Definitely goes on my re-read list!
