About this listen

Book one in the DI Westphall series.

A dead man walks into a police station. He tells a tale - bizarre as it is grotesque - of kidnap and organ harvesting. John Baden's story of being held prisoner for 12 years sounds far-fetched - but it's all about to get much, much stranger.

DI Ben Westphall has been given the case because of his background in MI6. He also has a knack for getting inside people's heads and seeing things others would miss. Westphall is no ordinary detective, and this is no ordinary case.

When his suspects start dying, Westphall realises someone is killing to cover up the truth. But what exactly is the truth? To find out, he'll have to question everything he's been told, before there's no one left to ask.

Song of the dead

I enjoyed this book a great crime story and a lot to think about. Only made better by Angus King as the narrator I could listen to him all day

Love this.

What a clever book I think I’ve read another story by Douglas Lindsey and think I enjoyed it too. Also Angus king is one of my favourite narrators.

Intriguing storyline, slow pace.

This book is not for you if you like your crime fiction fast-paced with lots of twists and turns. A slow moving tale with well drawn characters and intelligently constructed atmosphere. And a dash of metaphysics to muddy the waters. I can't see these books being made into a TV series, but if you are looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, give DI Westphall a spin.

Pitch-perfect narration was a pleasure to listen to.

Don’t waste your time

I bought this book because of the reviews that said it was great. No, no, no. It was terrible. The book goes off on so many tangents that have little to do with the story. Boring. I thought the synopsis sounded great, but I would not buy another book from this author. I actually persisted with the story for 3/4 of the book hoping it would get better, but in the end I had to cut my losses. Couldn’t put up with the boredom any longer.

LONG WINDED MEANDERING

Not even the narration of Angus King could give this book any help. It’s a long winded meandering mess. Awful awful awful. Not a fan of this author & won’t be reading any more books in the series.

Not my cup of cha

I persisted with this one, but the rambling path the author took had me leave it a few times but then after a while I’d go back and give it another go.
End result was that I didn’t enjoy the trip and thought the whole story could have much shorter. Will think again before listening to another, but I’m sure this style will appeal to other listeners 👍🏼
