About this listen

A novel about loving home and leaving home, but never escaping your roots. Or your footy colours.

Twenty-six-year-old Nicole Najim is struggling to find herself after a painful breakup, just when she thought she was going to settle down.

Working a dead-end job in the family car dealership and at a loose end, she picks up her camera and returns to the melting pot of Sydney’s West to rediscover her roots.

When she catches up with childhood friend, Danny, who makes his living in a shadowy underworld, their relationship intensifies just as the law starts to close in. Nicole must weigh her feelings against her deepest fears, all while chasing her own dreams and capturing the hidden truths around her.

Alex Sarkis writes with warmth, humour and a spot-on eye for the characters and suburbs of the world she grew up in.

The Lebanese community of Sydney in all its glory

I’m not from Sydney, nor am I Lebanese, but I found this an engaging story well worth a listen. I was slightly disquieted by feelings of empathy for essentially a criminal drug dealer though…

A slice of life of Sydney’s West

A beautifully written story that covers the ups and downs of life. Sarkis manages to capture the cultural aspect of growing up Lebanese in Sydney’s west with wit and elegance. I found myself laughing out loud a few times startling the people around me. Highly recommended!

Brilliant.

Such a relatable and engaging story.
I highly recommend it.
So easy to listen to while driving… especially for those of us who don’t have time to sit down with a book.

A heartfelt homage to Sydney’s west

I grew up in the inner west of Sydney, and can relate to this story so much. Family, friends, work, life in your late 20s. This book made me laugh hard and cry a little too. The writing is warm and funny and the performance is spot on.
