About this listen
Audie Awards 2022 finalist in the Autobiography/Memoir category
An Oprah book
Throughout her adolescence, Ashley Ford doesn't know how to deal with the worries that keep her up at night. If only she could turn to her father for his advice and support. But he's in prison, and she doesn't know what he did to end up there. After being raped by her ex-boyfriend, Ashley desperately searches for her sense of self. Then, her grandmother reveals the truth about her father's incarceration...and Ashley's world is turned upside down.
Ashley embarks on a powerful journey to find the connections between who she is and what she was born into, discovering that, however much we might try to untether ourselves from a painful past, the ties that bind families together are the strongest ones of all.

Beautifully told
I was captivated by Ashley’s story and her telling of it. She describes the imagination and innocence of childhood so beautifully. Her journey to adulthood, and the deep connection to family had me laughing an crying throughout.
The interview with Clint Smith at the end is a fantastic bonus.

Mixed feelings
I struggled a bit with this one. I found the author was, at times, unnecessary cruel towards her mother (the one who was always there) while idolising her father (the one who wasn’t). I know this is common with children, but as an adult reflecting back on those times I thought she might have been able to see this bias. I also felt she judged her actions by her intentions, but didn’t afford others this mercy. How others thought/felt, or what might have contributed to their actions/responses/behaviours was almost entirely absent. Growing up is hard, raising children is even harder. That said, Ashley C Ford is a gifted writer and I enjoyed all the ways in which she used language to convey what she was thinking or feeling. I would read more of her work.
