About this listen

The first career steps all new vets take are as challenging and awkward as those of a newborn foal. But with the right care and support, those early steps can quickly become confident strides. Sadly, this is not what happens to many newly graduated veterinarians as they enter the profession.

For the past decade multiple time practice owner, Dr. Dave Nicol has been convinced of two things in veterinary medicine.

Firstly, that we are doing something wrong with our people, as there is an alarming dropout rate from the veterinary profession.

Secondly, new graduates are the future, and we should be spending a lot more time and effort making sure that the next generation of vets is looked after better. To destroy the new vets of today is to destroy the veterinary industry of tomorrow.

As such, and because talk alone is cheap, Dr. Nicol spent many years planning, running, and improving a general practice internship program that offers a supportive and nurturing route for new graduates as they leave college and start their careers in practice. He was fortunate to have a good start in his life as a vet and throughout his career, was coached and mentored by some wonderful people. This audiobook is his way of saying thanks and passing on this good fortune.

You’ll find a huge amount of relevant knowledge which is essential to understand at the beginning of your career. Quite literally, stuff Dr. Nicol wishes someone had told him on day one. It would have saved a lot of time, stress, and errors if they had.

This audiobook distills two decades of experience from the frontline of veterinary medicine into an astonishingly valuable listen, providing you with the opportunity to rapidly accelerate your career and avoid the pitfalls that lie in wait for many unaware new graduates.

It also includes exclusive, bonus end-of-chapter podcast-style interviews with Dr. Nicol conducted by former Veterinary Economics editor Brendan Howard.
