I en lille afsidesliggende hytte vender den unge kongelige snigmorder Fitz langsomt tilbage til livet igen efter sit seneste opgør med prins Regal, der på svigefuld vis har tilranet sig tronen. De få venner, Fitz har, tror nu alle, at han er død, og han kan ikke kontakte dem uden at bringe deres liv i stor fare. Da Fitz således ikke har noget at miste, drager han i selskab med sin ulv af sted til Vadkøbing, hvor De Seks Hertugdømmers nye hersker har trukket sig tilbage efter at have overladt rigets kyst til Rødskibspiraterne.
