Men jeg nåede at se en mørk skygge skråt hen over billedet. Carolin havde undret sig over skyggen - hvis var den. De usynligt tilstedeværende interesserede hende mest, og hun havde snakket om fotografen som den, der er med på alle billeder uden selv at kunne ses.
Det var alt sammen typisk for Carolin, denne mærkelige skabning, som blev ung pige hos os, men ikke mindede om nogen af dem, vi før havde haft. Carolin, der ville elskes af alle, og som også blev det - undtagen måske af Svea, vores gamle husholderske, der syntes, at hun mildt sagt var en uberegnelig person.
