About this listen

The skitarii are the soldiers of the Machine God, the tireless legions of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Holy warriors, they carry the word of the Omnissiah across the galaxy, destroying the impure machines of aliens and renegades and spearheading the Quest for Knowledge.

A discovery of ancient technology sends a skitarii legion, commanded by Alpha Primus Haldron-44 Stroika, into battle on a forge world overrun by Chaos. When a cataclysm cuts him off from his tech-priest overseers, Stroika must rally his forces and battle both corrupt machines and Chaos Space Marines if he is to achieve victory.

The best insight into the Mechanicus yet

A great addition to th Black Library, and yet another fantastic performance by Toby Longworth.
Battle sequences tend to drag, and plot points are delivered more slowly than I'd like, but even with these criticisms the novel contributes perfectly to the moody and entertaining atmosphere of the grimdark 40k universe.

An excellent part one and introduction to the Skitarii

This book brings the details of the Skitarii to life in great detail, including their place within the hierarchy of the Mechanicus and often quite brutal existence not only in warfare but also the mechanisation of not just body but also mind.

For best enjoyment however, note that it is part one in a pair of books with the book Techpriest by the same author continuing on from the events of this book.

thoroughly enjoyable

it is a well put together representation of the Mechanicus and how the Magos think and act, as well as providing insight to how warp weapons interact with armour and shields. The VA work is really well done he's got a monotone voice which really lends itself to the Mechanicus.

The only issue I have is the number of times the word 'baroque' is used.

Peculiar vocabulary proving a barrier

Excellent performance, with really varied and distinctive voicing for different characters. Particularly for characters with mechanical inflections.

The hardest part is that the vocabulary of the skitarii and the admech overall is so convoluted and almost indecipherable that is made following the story really hard sometimes. Character titles and equipment names were a maze to navigate that got me lost more times than I could count. Which is frustrating since the story is decent.
