About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
In Silverview, John le Carré turns his focus to the world that occupied his writing for the past 60 years - the secret world itself.
Julian Lawndsley has renounced his high-flying job in the City for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. But only a couple of months into his new career, Julian's evening is disrupted by a visitor. Edward, a Polish émigré living in Silverview, the big house on the edge of town, seems to know a lot about Julian's family and is rather too interested in the inner workings of his modest new enterprise.
When a letter turns up at the door of a spy chief in London warning him of a dangerous leak, the investigations lead him to this quiet town by the sea....
Silverview is the mesmerising story of an encounter between innocence and experience and between public duty and private morals. In his inimitable voice, John le Carré, the greatest chronicler of our age, seeks to answer the question of what we truly owe to the people we love.

Still committed
The reader is not left disappointed with John le Carre's last novel, He stays committed to delivering a story that almost turns each page on its own. Not a word wasted. The narrative is delicate and restrained and we have spies with doubts, with emotions. They look into the mirror and have no answer. The story looks at the service with more humanity than any previous novel. And I loved that rawness. It's a truly wonderful book and Toby Jones spins the yarn with vigour.

One of the best
Le’Carre has in my opinion exceeded himself with this book. Absolutely superb. He leads the listener on a merry dance, steering us to expectations that don’t surface. Teasing the listener along the garden path and may I say with better success this time. The best literary writer and he will be greatly missed

Exciting reading.
I was doubtful of being interested in a work without Smiley heading the service, but this is one of Le Carre's best.
Well worth a listen!

le Carre at his finest.
A freshingly slow placed plot that grips and doesn't let go. Packed with literary allusions to the best of English poets and writers.

Deceptive pace, beautifully written.
So sad that this is the last Le Carre book. The plot seems to move along slowly but as always this is lulling us into a false sense of security. There is a great deal happening as the plot lines come together and characters aren't as they seem. I'm always happy to go along with the pace due to the beautifully written prose, knowing that events will all come together unexpectedly. If the reader/listener is after a James Bond spy story, this is the wrong book. If the requirement is a subtle and sophisticated experience with an unfolding plot and well developed characters - this is the perfect book. As always the intricacies of the spy world are revealed through the lovely literary prose, I will miss this writer very much. Toby Jones was an excellent narrator, so suited to Le Carre's writing.

not John LeCarre at his best
The story was a chore to listen to. It was convoluted and boring. A great shame for a great writer.
