About this listen
Here is a tale straight from the fireside. We are compelled to follow the humble and mysterious figure of the linen weaver Silas Marner, on his journey from solitude and exile to the warmth and joy of family life. His path is a strange one; when he loses his hoard of hard-earned coins all seems to be lost, but in place of the golden guineas come the golden curls of a child - and from desolate misery comes triumphant joy.

Odd accents
I enjoyed the story but found the narration off-putting. The story is set in rural Warwickshire and with the exception of the Silas Marner all the other characters come from there. However all are voiced with what I would describe as utility West Country accents commonly used in Thomas Hardy narrations to cover anyone from Hampshire to Cornwall and up to Gloucestershire. The utility accent is irritating anyway, but especially so when it is misapplied.

Moving and Memorable
This is the second book by George Elliot that I have read. The first, Middlemarch, may be one of the greatest novels of all time. This is a much more modest story, but nevertheless of great emotional power. It’s a story about the redemptive power of love and community above all the worldly things we are supposed to value like money and class and station and power. set in northern England around the time of the industrial revolution, the novel also has a lot to say about the effect on the small towns of rapid industrialisation and mechanisation. In capturing the inflections of the local dialects the narrator adds significant depths to the story.
