Publisher's Summary

Teachings and meditations to "shift" into the freedom of awakening.

It is possible to access the same sense of well-being, clarity, inner freedom, and loving connection realized by the world's meditation masters. We can do this by shifting our awareness in the midst of our daily lives. Shift into Freedom is an unabridged audiobook presentation of innovative teacher Loch Kelly's training manual for actively participating in the evolution of your own consciousness.

Synthesizing insights from neuroscience and psychology with wisdom from the world's contemplative traditions, Shift into Freedom offers an accessible and remarkably powerful series of meditations that lead us to a little-known natural capacity called "awake awareness". Through an unfolding process of "small glimpses, many times", these exercises shift us from a thought-based knowing to an awareness-based way of operating in the world.

With continued practice, we learn to "unhook" from our customary home in our ego-based identity - and then sustain an embodied presence and relatedness known as "open-hearted awareness". Loch Kelly teaches that this is "the meeting place of awakening and growing up, where we have the capacity to handle a fully emotional, intimate life and act with authenticity and compassion."

"The goal of these meditations is not to transcend the human condition," explains Loch Kelly, "but to discover how to live a fully intimate human life." Shift into Freedom gives you the tools to navigate your life with clarity and unconditional love.

Profound

I’d mucked around on Sam Harris’ Waking Up app, which was a good introduction to meditation, before sitting a 10 day Vipassana, which was an extraordinary experience. There were a few thing both on retreat and after retreat that didn’t sit right with me. For example, why did people have to return to retreats to, as they say, recharge? And why did an ardent Vipassana meditator have to sit for two hours per day to, as he said, keep his head above water? After Vipassana I meditated steadily for 5 months barely missing a sit and getting to 2 x 50 minutes per day. After the initial buzz of the retreat wore off, however, stress and depression and life in general came slowly back, and then, unfortunately, fully back.

Many years before, I had experienced a spontaneous awakening of the sort that could only be described as an experience of perfect ordinariness. And even on the Vipassana retreat, I never felt close to that experience. It wasn’t taking me in that direction, and that is absolutely the direction I needed to go.

Sam Harris had mentioned a bit of stuff about Dzogchen, glimpses and cutting through in the moment, which made sense to me. In fact, I had actually played with “pointing out” methods with friends before not knowing that this was a Dzogchen technique, but simply a way to show them, and remind me, that perfect ordinary awareness is right in front of our noses at all times.

When I heard Loch speak to Sam on Sam’s podcast my ears pricked up. And when I began listening to Shift into Freedom I rejoiced. Here is a clear path to ordinary, down to earth freedom. It’s the teacher and method I’ve been looking for. I’m only a few days in but I’ve already shifted significantly closer to the place I need to be - at my senses and out of my chattering head. Time will tell whether his teachings bring about a fundamental shift, but even if it doesn’t, the philosophies, techniques and experiences described are as clear and lucid as they come.

End unnecessary suffering, read this book.

If I could choose only one book to give to my younger self, this would be it. The wisdom contained within is humbly distilled and easily accessible. The result is a perfect vehicle to explore the nature of our being.

Any skepticism that arose while listening was consistently satisfied by Loch's frictionless combination of timeless wisdom and modern science.

For me, this book marks an unmistakable end to the hopelessness that has driven my search for sustainable wellbeing. The methods presented here, underpinned by Loch's flawless explanation of the principles at work, have resulted in a "shift" from a perceived understanding of the nature of being to, an experiential knowing. If the value of such a shift doesn't seem significant, I promise you, by the end of this book, it will.
