Publisher's Summary

A haunting tale of suspense, rendered with the masterful skill only Barker could muster.

After the loss of his parents, young Jack Thatch first met Stella as a child - this cryptic little girl of eight with dark hair and darker eyes, sitting alone on a bench in the cemetery clutching her favorite book. Gone moments later, the brief encounter would spark an obsession. She'd creep into his thoughts, his every waking moment, until he finally finds her again exactly one year later, sitting upon the same bench, only to disappear again soon after.

The body of a man found in an alley, every inch of his flesh horribly burned, yet his clothing completely untouched. For Detective Faustino Brier, this wasn't the first, and he knew it wouldn't be the last. It was no different from the others. He'd find another just like it one year from today. August 9, to be exact.

Isolated and locked away from the world in a shadowy lab, a little boy known only as Subject "D" waits, grows, learns. He's permitted to speak to no one. He has never known the touch of another. Harboring a power so horrific, those in control will never allow him beyond their walls.

All of them linked in ways unimaginable.

She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be conjures thoughts of early King and Koontz. A heart-pounding ride that creeps under your skin and will have you listening long into the night.

Narration

TheA little long winded in the middle. Ending could have been tighter but still a good listen.

Amazing!

I absolutely loved this book. An epic tale of a boy coming of age. The characters so beautifully developed and crafted. This would make a phenomenal miniseries. If you love "Stranger Things" or Stephen King, you'll love this book.
Yes, it's long, but not tedious.
The narrator was excellent, and I can't imagine anyone else reading it. He did lots of voices, all of which were excellent, except for Stella's voice, which did sound a bit silly.
My only criticism of the book is the title; it doesn't fit the story at all. A more succinct and fitting title would probably sell more books. However, overall, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Hard to put down

At 21 hours I thought this book would be hard going; it was not. I gave up many other interests just to listen. Wow, what an interesting saga; very unique and creative writing. I've always loved JD Barker, whose books might be described as somewhat sci-fi at a stretch, and very down to earth as well. The characters were well drawn and relatable and the narration was superb and don't believe it good have been bettered. I thoroughly recommend to those who love books that are a bit different, exciting and with a touch of sci-fi. Well done JD can hardly wait for your next one....

it's long but I still wanted more

this story is so well written it just flows effortlessly. The narration is superb, absolutely one of my favourites now!
The plot and characters will have you feeling the full gamut of emotions, if you're after a quick full on action story this is probably not for you but having said that, I typically don't go for this particular style either and yet here I am singing its praises!
You'd be hard pressed to find a better written story, the attention to detail and story development is just amazing.
