Dr. Joseph Burgo
About this listen
Shame is a difficult emotion, and most of us do what we can to avoid it. But veteran psychologist Joseph Burgo shows us how we can use shame - which is an inevitable part of being human - as a tool for better understanding ourselves and our relationships with others.
Encounters with embarrassment, guilt, self-consciousness and remorse are an unavoidable part of everyday life, and they sometimes have lessons to teach us - about our goals and values, about the people we expect ourselves to be.
Richly illustrated with clinical stories from Burgo's 35 years in private practice, Shame suggests that this often excruciating emotion tells us a lot about our own self-awareness and should not always be considered a toxic influence in our lives.
Joseph Burgo takes an intimate look at the full spectrum of shame - often masked by addiction, promiscuity, perfectionism, self-loathing or narcissism - and offers a new, positive route forward on the road to authentic self-esteem.

Balances My Thoughts
I found this audio book helpful to balance my thoughts regarding shame. There are exercises that are part of this book that are described in audio in the appendix that are bit hard to follow in an audio format, but I believe are available on the author’s web site

I'm a good book but dislike aspects
I really struggle with authors who use anecdotes of clients in their work. It feels as if valuable time has been taken up talking about this individual rather than some important theoretical or research based evidence to help with the inquiry. If this book had not had examples of clients I think I would have wanted to listen to all of the book but I couldn't. I've found it really difficult to listen to these other people And these reports of their experience.
