Brilliant, but wow dark!
So well written, as expected by Carlton. Narration was perfect duet, with each line read by the appropriate voice... Does so much to really get into the story and is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE way to hear an audio book.
There's some incredibly hard parts to listen to, so anyone whose suffered gaslighting and SA (rape, assault, battery, etc) , be warned. More a drama/crime/survival story than a dark romance in the typical sense.
This book kept me enthralled the entire time.

Not what I expected
I love HD Carlton’s writing. I went into this book completely blind, didn’t read the synopsis, didn’t check the triggers (I knew there’d be some). I found it a compelling account of the depths of a DV relationship. I recognised a lot of parallels in the early stages of the FMCs DV situation to one of my own relationships that I managed to get out of before it got physical. It was almost relieving to see my own internal monologue during that time be reflected in River’s own.
And Jacob Morgan could read the dictionary and I’d still find it erotic. His voice is just 🥵🥵🥵

Wow
Love H. D. Carlton’s books, not afraid to pull any punches or let the main characters get hurt. It makes them so much more real. The DV situation especially so. The self-doubt, guilt, gaslighting, isolation, love-bombing and the slow build of escalating severity and manipulation. That’s exactly what it feels like. And that’s only part of the story. I love the complexity of the authors storytelling, all the threads woven together.
Plus, the performance of both narrators was excellent.

Voice acting was superb, I could listen to Jacob Morgan all day every day. Loved the story, satisfying ending. 100/10

Domestic violence trigger warning⚠️
OMG, the first 18 chapters were difficult to listen to.
I really wish there was a trigger list at the start of the audio book, especially regarding domestic violence.
After that I couldn't stop listening, I couldn't get enough of Mako and River, and their unfolding storylines. I loved the ending.

Mako 🥰
Despite there being a LOT of dark triggers… I was constantly craving to read more and I managed to finish this book within a day. H.D Carlton’s storytelling is so different from other author’s I have read and because of this, I’m looking forward to what she has to offer next.
