About this listen
From the author of Love & Virtue, Seeing Other People is the darkly funny story of two very different sisters, and the summer that stretches their relationship almost to breaking point.
Charlie's skin was stinging. Not with heat or sweat, but with that intense, body-defining self-consciousness—that sense of being watched. She lowered her eyes from Eleanor's loving gaze. Her throat taut with tears, she swallowed. ‘You're a good sister, Eleanor.'
‘Don't say that.'
After two years of lockdowns, there's change in the air. Eleanor has just broken up with her boyfriend, Charlie's career as an actress is starting up again. They're finally ready to pursue their dreams—relationships, career, family—if only they can work out what it is they really want.
When principles and desires clash, Eleanor and Charlie are forced to ask: where is the line between self-love and selfishness? In all their confusion, mistakes will be made and lies will be told as they reckon with the limits of their own self-awareness.

gorgeous writing
loved all the imagery, found the plot tipped into being a little too melodramatic for me towards the end but loved that the most important relationship is their sisterhood.

Youth
Youth well reflected and portrayed- the metamorphosis of self awareness with maturity was affirming- felt familiar- we’ve all been there- self forgiveness is essential as we age

It’s so amazingly written, you can tell the author has experience with theatre. It was simply brilliant.

Brilliant book
I loved this book! The story was engaging. The characters were real and relatable. The narrator did an excellent job and I loved the subtleties of voice changes for each character. I read Diana Reid’s first book and loved it, and enjoyed this book equally. Highly recommend!

It was okay
Big on character development but I felt that the plot didn’t begin until at least half way through

The narrator was excellent the plot was mid tier
I loved the narrator and her voice she was extremely expressive and you didn’t really need to have who was talking explicitly told to you. However I felt that the ending rather dragged abit and for the last three chapters I just wanted to get on with it. But the resolution of the second last chapter was nice, however ruined I feel by the epilogue chapter. A lot of my criticisms at the beginning was with me not liking Elenor as a character so having to listen to her pov was a bit unbearable and shoe horning in the end “twist” I felt was unnecessary and kinda diminished the point the book was trying to make. Overall not bad but I don’t think I’ll re-listen.

Not for me
Clever but not engaging writing. To love a book I really have to love the characters. I didn’t even like one person in this cast. They all came across as self absorbed, naval gazing islands. Dialogue drives character development to a larger extent than is necessary. And while the characters are articulate and alarmingly insightful about themselves no one that I know ever talks like this. And I know a huge array of twenty somethings who are incredibly bright and talented. It’s an exercise in psycho babble to rival Woody Allen’s finest rantings. There is an over reliance on pulling out clever similes and metaphors to set the scene. Some of these devices are interesting but feel contrived. The writing seems calculated rather than lyrical. There is clearly talent here. The writing just needs to move from the intellectual towards artistry.

Not sure
Perhaps would be better suited to a younger audience (like high school). In my opinion there was not enough depth to any of the characters. I also felt that often concepts that the author wanted to bring out in the book are merely present through discussion of the actual topics in dialogue between the characters rather than being shown through the characters’ actions, their thoughts or the story line (which feels a bit lazy). Found the narrative slow paced and I’m not sure if there was a proper end point reached by the protagonist or the other characters. Conscious that this is only the second book out from the author so will see what she comes out with next, however I would not recommend this book.
