About this listen

Three murders. Three innocent victims. What secrets did they share with their killer?

A bottle of bubble bath and colorful, plastic boats were scattered in small puddles on the floor. In the bathtub lay Linda Upton, fully-clothed, her lips a shade of blue, and her bloodshot eyes wide open.

When a young mother is found drowned in the bath, clutching a receipt saying 'all debts paid', Detective Robyn Carter knows it's just the beginning of a harrowing case. She recognizes the signs of a serial killer, and when a second victim with a receipt is found, her worst fears are confirmed.

With the local press whipping the public into a frenzy, Robyn is under pressure to solve the crime yesterday. But her team can't find a link between the two bodies, and the cracks are starting to show.

With the local press whipping the public into a frenzy, Robyn is under pressure to solve the crime yesterday. But her team can't find a link between the two bodies, and the cracks are starting to show.

The press call him The Leopard for his stealth, speed, and brutality. Can Robyn stop the most twisted killer of her career before it's too late?

A heart-pounding, toe-curling, one-sitting serial killer thriller that will hook you from the first minute till the last. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, and Karin Slaughter.

The narrator drove me mad

A good story it was just the way it was told. I felt like someone was reading me a children’s book. It was so slow

story Great, narrator not my cup of tea

I liked the story but found the narator to be not a great match for the story. narrator has a nice voice, but a bit boring for a thriller. seems more suited to children's books or educational.

Pronunciation Issues

I enjoy the Robyn Carter books and generally Emma Newman reads well. BUT, and it’s a big “but”for me, I am driven to distraction by the way Newman diphthongises “a”in all situations. I can’t work out whether it’s pretentious or just fingernails on blackboard irritating. So I give up. The odd mispronunciation of a challenging word in an audiobook is forgivable but I’m done with Wyer books read by Emma Newman.

Enjoyable Audiobook Don't Like this Reader

Enjoyable audiobook. Plenty of interesting characters but I personally can't get engrossed due to the reader's style. I find it monotonous and robotic. Her insistence on pronouncing 'a' as in 'a cat' as 'ay' makes the conversations very stiff and more like a lecturer trying to emphasize points. Eg read the following aloud 'if we had ay car we could get ay map and go to ay park for ay picnic'. It just doesn't sound natural. For me it ruins the story because it annoys me as I find it very noticeable and it detracts from the content

Gripping

What I really like about this book is how DCI Carter battles to figure it all out, battles the pressures and limitations from above and meanwhile the killer strikes again and again. I am sure its tempting to ensure the hero beats all the odds to win through and save the day. Eventually this does happen when a break is happened upon. It makes this book that bit more different and believable.

Great read, not so great narration

What made the experience of listening to Secrets of the Dead the most enjoyable?

Really enjoyed this story, the plot is strong with good characters and plenty of twists and turns. You feel the frustration of the detective.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Robyn Carter, the central character, is well drawn and easy to feel sympathy for.

Did Emma Newman do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Not totally sold on the narration. At times it is a little monotone and doesn’t help the listener get a sense of characters emotions.

Really enjoying the series

This is the second book in the series. I love how you don't need to have read the first one to understand what is happening in the second. This story takes a bit of time to get into but definitely worth it in the end.

Great but..

I loved the story and this one was much more attention grabbing than the first one, the narrater still isn’t my favourite but I found her easier to listen to this time and rather enjoyed it!! On to number 3!

Terrible narration

I couldn’t actually even listen to this due to the narration. Love all the Carol Wyer books but sorry Emma. Was only able to give the story 1 star as couldn’t put myself through it
