About this listen
A miller found under his wheel.
It's 1194, and Sir Faucon de Ramis, the shire's newly appointed keeper of the pleas, must do his duty and make an official declaration of the cause of a miller's death. Saddled with a clerk who names Faucon his "penance", the shire's first crowner must thread the tangled relationships between the sheriff, the village of Priors Holston, and the priory that once ruled it.
As a simple task takes a turn to the political, what seems obvious isn't, and what appears safe turns out to be more dangerous than he could imagine.

One of my favourite series!
I love this series!
Edmund, the clerk reminds me of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory! it's really awesome how the characters develop!
this series has definitely got me more interested in the history of the crowner that often features in medieval stories!
I love the stories! It's well worth a listen, I've listened to this series more than once now! I hope you enjoy this series as much as I have.
I wish there were more books in the series.

A good series that gets better with each book.
Denise Domning weaves intriguing murder mysteries into a detailed setting of English life in 1194. Each book contains its own tale, however Domning also weaves a deeper mystery that builds with each book, enticing the reader onwards while also making it worthwhile to read the series in order. The protagonist, Ramis, is basically the ancient equivalent of a coroner/detective, and his character and surrounding cast are well developed with each book.
The books are not overly gruesome, just enough to be appropriate for both adults and teenagers by my reckoning. Good narrating by Gildart Jackson, even though his interpretation of some of the characters' voices don't sit quite right with me.
I'm invested in seeing this series through to completion.

Great listening
Wonderful woven story with lots of detail. Story reminds my of Bernard Knight or Peter Ellis. Beautifully narrated.

A period piece
I found this book hard to follow at times. For me the descriptors used in the actions and scenes were too wordy and made it hard to follow in parts . It did not draw me in .
