About this listen

The revealing, compelling memoir of one of Australia's foremost cardiothoracic surgeons, Dr Nikki Stamp.

From childhood, Nikki Stamp wanted to be a doctor. It was a calling, not a career. Her love for her vocation only grew as a medical student, and as a young registrar going through training rotations she fell, totally and utterly, for the hugely demanding speciality of cardiothoracic surgery. But alongside the excitement and enormous challenges of trying to make it in one of the toughest and most competitive fields of surgery came warning signs. Even in the operating theatre, where she felt most alive, she battled with sexism, enormous egos and at times outright bullying. And within the hospital system, she lived with inhuman hours, chronic sleep deprivation and bureaucratic mismanagement that had a profoundly damaging effect on her life outside of work.

From the drama of the operating theatre, filled with both triumph and tragedy, to the brutal realities of surgical training and the sacrifices needed to make it to the top, to entrenched misogyny and the grinding nature of hospital politics, Scrubbed is one of the most revealing audiobooks about the real life and experiences of a surgeon.

some story!

An explosive, though not new, look behind the scenes of a section of the Australian Medical department.
What now? Can females ever get the same opportunities?

Confirms my own experience!

Thanks for confirming my own experience working in the clinical environment - especially the public health system. Glad I moved on as well and become an entrepreneur, before suffering potential brain rot or worse.

Great to enter this world albeit by book only.

An enjoyable read. As an NZ nurse as a CNS in ORL - otology being my predominant focus - clinics of my own - I have noted how kind Otologists are compared to many other medical disciplines (and nursing for that matter but a different style of bullying) , and think if had been choosing within medicine myself may have had this as part of the decision factor. It’s great Nikki calling it out. It’s tragic women surgeons need to work harder and have more obstacles placed in front of them to attain their goal. Woman want woman surgeons. We’ve read the evidence of good and better outcomes for women by woman. So much I could say about this book. A great read. Thanks Nikki.

Loved every second

As a ICU nurse this book gave me the full expirence. I laughed, I cried, I yelled out in excitement and frustration. Nikki beautifully detailed the diagloge of the health care system and these raw truths need to be spoken of more.

The honesty and professionalism

Writing this must have been terribly cathartic. It is about time someone spoke up, honestly and openly about how flawed the public health system is. My husband and I (both recently retired from public health) luckily had each other on an almost daily basis to debrief with about how broken "the system " is and how administrators take advantage of good people who want to help patients and support doctors, knowing we will just put up with it because ultimately the patient must be priority. Brilliantly written.
