About this listen
About the author: Mary Baker Glover (later Mary Baker Eddy) challenged long-standing religious doctrines in an age long before women even had the right to vote. She certainly did not claim ownership of these ideas, but rather accepted them as divine revelation– her only source, the Bible, outside the constraints of 1900 years of theological interpretation. Against immense odds, this lone woman, with no financial backing, and no church to support her, managed to get this book, Science and Health, published in 1875. Years later, after she had established her own world-wide church, and taught and published extensively, Mrs. Eddy made the statement: “Whatever is said and written correctly on this Science originates from the Principle and practice laid down in Science and Health, a work which I published in 1875. This was the first book, recorded in history, which elucidates a pathological Science purely mental.” It is fascinating to listen to this book, knowing that, by her own admission, when Mrs. Glover wrote the book, she described her role as “a scribe under orders.”
About the narrator: Andrew W. Kidd was raised in a strong Christian home, his father an Anglican minister. He was dissatisfied, however, with what he had been taught. When he found the book, Science and Health, he realized at once that this was the truth for which he’d been seeking. After many years studying and practicing Christian Science as a member of an independent church, he recorded the complete published writings of Mary Baker Eddy, including this first edition of Science and Health, which has never been done before. From his reading, it is clear he has a deep appreciation for the revelation Mary Baker Eddy gave to the world.
