About this listen

Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world.

No one expected them to be heroes.

Least of all, them.

so close

A childhood classic brought to life by a brilliant narrator with 1 small wrinkle. So many words mispronounced. I know in fantasy there can be different interpretations but these stories exist as movies, games, comics , books and there is a plethora of source material. So getting that part wrong grated on me. especially Draconian. thats already a real word and given its used over 1000 times across the trilogy hearing dray-conian over drac-onian is hard to ignore. Aldo there is a very strangly tone deaf and awkward moment where the narrator gives the primative race of Gully Dwarves a hillbilly accent. Racist may not be the right word but it definitely is super inappropriate

Maybe not for me

To the book: My other half has read this book so many times, he can quote it by heart. I haven't read a fantasy based on D&D before and I struggled to become invested in the giant cast of characters.
The book is well written and if dwarves and elves are your thing, you'll probably thoroughly enjoy this. It wasn't really my cup of tea, if I read fantasy novels, I prefer to have one toe still in semi-reality as I know it.

To the Narration: Not great. Constant emphasis on phrases and words out of the context of the writing made it a hard listen. The characterisations of the players by the narrator were good, but the weird pace of the reading means I won't be in a hurry to purchase another book read by this narrator.

Basically a D&D campaign

It reads like bad d&d fanfic, and shows its age. Still worth a read though
