About this listen

This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.

If only reality could resemble the fantasy of what pregnancy is supposed to be like - the brimming excitement, the feelings of significance, a healthy glow. But for Jenny, a young mother-to-be recently relocated from NYC to the suburbs, pregnancy hasn't done a thing to cure her incessant self-doubt and loneliness. Without her job and her city friends to anchor her, Jenny must face her life - a kind but slightly distant husband, a friend's obsessively child-centered existence, and the fact of her own common ordinariness. In a quest for self-fulfillment, Jenny turns to a prenatal yoga class, hoping that it will provide companionable understanding and a sense of wholeness. With fleeting glimpses of truth and clarity, "Satya" is a story for all of us whose lives haven't turned out as imagined.
