About this listen
A gripping thriller that follows assassin Nicholai Hel across Asia as he fights to regain his freedom.
Sugamo Prison, Japan, October 1951. Nicholai Hel has spent the last three years in solitary confinement for the murder of his mentor. A formidable assassin as well as a master of hoda korosu or 'naked kill', he has developed a supreme awareness of the presence of danger. Suddenly offered the chance of freedom, he feels it now as never before...
Overseen by Haverford, his American spymaster he must go to Beijing and kill the Soviet Union's commissioner to China. In a landscape primed for war this is a suicide mission he has no choice but to accept.
Can Hel succeed in winning his freedom and if so, at what cost? And can he ever achieve his ultimate goal of satori - the possibility of true understanding and harmony with the world?

Does Trevanian's Shibumi Justice
Can't fault this book at all. The style of writing of Don Winslow is similar to that of Trevanian so when you listen to this book you can see he was the natural choice. The way characters are so fleshed out and how it will delve into Hel's past or someone's perspective just to add more depth to the current situation. You understand motivations, you find yourself feeling what they would feel.
It's an excellent book and I only wish there was more on Nicholai Hel.

Enjoyable addition to ‘Shibumi’ by Trevanian
Enjoyed this book however became frustratingly annoyed with the many 50-100 word chapters within ‘Satori’.

Wonderful Prequel
Don Winslow has created an exceptional prequel to the Classic, Shabumi. As with most of Winslow's books, I found any excuse to keep listening. Well researched, beautifully written, a fabulous read.

A hard act to follow
Roger Whittaker had such a unique voice. When l first read Trevanian's Shibumi, the effect on my 18 year old mind was profound. It influenced my world view. Winslow does a stirling effort... however it felt a little manufactured. Holder Graham is an outstanding narrator.
