About this listen
From number one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrew comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power and family bloodlines are the new currency of society....
In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the head of her house. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.
But behind the scenes, powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.
To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her house - and her heart.

pretty good
I've been avoiding this book because I've seen so many disappointed reviews by fans of the series.
I can kind of see how many might not like the new pairing of C and A. they are quite different from Nevada and Rogan. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, though.
I do think that both Catalina and Alessandro are ridiculously overskilled/powered. No one was really much of a challenge to them and that does bring down the story a star, in my opinion.
But I liked their interaction and I think they have a pretty good connection.
I liked the hints of mutual pining we get.
Not a big fan of cliffhanger ending, of course.
There was also a lot less of a romance component in the story than other reviewers led me to believe (most harped on about it being much more blatantly paranormal romance than urban fantasy - which I didn't find at all to be the case).
But considering that the romance is probably going to have a 3 book arch like the first 3 books with Nevada, that was also not a surprise, so I'm ok with it.
It was a solidly written book with plausible enough plot; with dangling threads to be tied up in next 2 books.
Catalina was a better heroine than I expected but I went in with very low expectations.
Alessandro was less annoying than expected but also a lot less fleshed out and harder to connect with.
Baylor family were not utilised enough. That's a shame and a weakness in this installment. Hopefully, that will be fixed in the future books.
The narration was great, perfectly on point. Very enjoyable tone and great accents. Well characterised and distinctive voices of all speaking characters.
Don't out too much stock in the reviews bagging the pairing. Catalina's infatuation is no more unlikely than any heroine in a romance who falls for the guy without being able to explain the initial draw.
they spend plenty of time during this book to build a basis beyond looks and fantasy.
I'm looking forward to the next book - I'm glad I don't have to wait a whole year.

excellent progression
Ilona Andrew is consistently an excellent read I felt the story moved in comfortable pace and didn't feel rushed and the narrator gives voice to the character that suits her personality

Not as good as previous books in the series
This one really took a while to warm up. The characters seemed flat and lacking any sense of humour or interesting personality quirks. It started to engage me in the last quarter of the book, so I will get the next one.

Not as good as the previous books in the series
Catalina's story isn't as good as Nevada and Rogan. Scant on the amusing interactions with the Baylor family and other background characters.
