About this listen

The incredible new novel and brand new world from the international bestselling author of the Wool trilogy.

The old world is buried. A new one has been forged atop the shifting dunes. Here in this land of howling wind and infernal sand, four siblings find themselves scattered and lost. Palmer has never been the same since his father walked out twelve years ago. His elder sister, Vic, is trying to run away from the past; his younger brothers, Connor and Rob, are risking their lives to embrace it. His mother, left with nothing but anger, is just trying to forget.

Palmer wants to prove his worth, not only to his family, but to himself. And in the barren, dune-covered landscape of his home, there is only one way to earn respect: Sand-diving. Plunging deep below the desert floor in search of relics and scraps of the old world. He is about to embark on the most dangerous dive of his young life, aiming to become the first to discover the rumoured city below.

Deep within the sand lies the key to bringing his family together - and tearing their world apart.

A very different apocalypse.

So the world ended, at least for some... This story had a lot going on, more than a short review can talk about. in brief, people are suffering a war they don't know exists, across the rolling sands they dig a life out of. A family of varied and deep characters lead us through their tortured world with a simple and relatable wish of an easier life. But the promise of one beyond the horizon is not to be had. As usual, Howey builds a world far greater than the pocket inhabited by his characters, and this world has many possible stories on both sides of the chasm. Perhaps if we're nice, he might write some for us! We all love the silo series, but this one has a far greater cinematic potential, it's a richly described world with a gripping story to occupy it. My only complaint (spoiler alert) is I would have loved to follow the end of Vic's story carrying the device to the city through her own eyes, but I can understand well the choice to tell it through her siblings from afar, leaving her possible demise unproven.

Finished really suddenly

It really needed a sequel and a bit more about the why of everything... No where near as good as the wool series...

Gritty

In the Silo universe but above ground, follow the adventures of a family of sand divers and the mysterious departure of their father.
Well narrated and a thoroughly enjoyable listen.

Not the Wool Series but pretty entertaining

As usual Mr Howey has given us an unique world to live in for a while with characters of depth. While I really enjoyed this book, it wasn’t as good as his previous works but in saying that they were a pretty high benchmark!

Great narrator. Have questions and storyline

The narrator is great!

The story seemed to be rather rushed at the end. I also have lots of questions about the story that seemed to have been pushed aside. Not the worst book but not as good as the wool series.
