About this listen

Susan Duncan's best-selling memoir about starting again and risking everything to find the only thing you need.

At 44, Susan Duncan appeared to have it all. Editor of two of Australia's top-selling women's magazines, a happy marriage, a jet-setting lifestyle covering stories from New York to Greenland, rubbing shoulders with Hollywood royalty, the world was her oyster.

But when her beloved husband and brother die within three days of each other, her glittering life shatters. In shock, she zips on her work face and soldiers on - until one morning 18 months later when she simply can't get out of bed.

Heartbreaking, funny and searingly honest, Salvation Creek is the story of a woman who found the courage not only to walk away from a successful career and begin again, but also to beat the odds in her own battle for survival and find a new life - and love - in a tiny waterside idyll cut off from the outside world.

From the terrifying first step of quitting the job that had always anchored her to abandoning herself to a passionate affair that she knows will break her heart, Duncan never flinches from the truth or loses her wicked sense of humour. Even when she finds a paradise on earth only to discover that it may be too late. It's been said that the greatest risk in life is not to take a risk.

Our History

I really enjoyed this book. And I
Like Susan's style of recounting the events in her life. Sometimes though her introspection had a jarring tone, almost false, as though she felt it better expressed differently from what she actually felt. A great book, revealing an unexpected life.

Dear Audible - please - no music!

I have read this book before and completely loved it. Deciding to revisit I opted for the Audio this time. I am a quarter of a way through listening trying very hard not to be irritated by the trite music played between chapters, and even between paragraphs in places! Please Audible - this is heart-rending emotional story and my anticipated enjoyment at revisiting it is all but being destroyed by the dreadful music. Not what I paid for and I don't believe music has any place in an audio book performance. It interrupts the narration and feels like an invasion. I am so disappointed. Please note the one star rating for performance is nothing to do with my opinion of Susan Duncan's performance of her own work which I would rate highly.

Loved this book.

What a wonderful book, beautifully written and so good that it was read by the Author. It’s a book that touches everyone’s lives in one way or another, but personally touched me in many ways. Thanks Susan !!

Cosy and warm

The Australiana local scenic descriptions are priceless and knowledge in suburban living into the sea faring life... A definite coming of age tale and dealing with cancer struggle

Honest and entertaining

Refreshingly honest recollection of a life lived and still living. Heartfelt and funny, no glossing over the hard stuff.

Just can’t get into this

I initially started out enjoying this book then something happened. Gradually I started feeling as though I was listening to a person of privilege write a memoir for their friends to read.

The further I listened the more interested waned until I archived the novel.

This book was not for me. It may be for others.
