About this listen

Don't miss King's #1 chilling classic, now a major motion picture from Warner Bros. Pictures.

'Salem's Lot is a small New England town with white clapboard houses, tree-lined streets and solid church steeples. Of course there are tales of strange happenings - but no more than in any other such town.

Ben Mears has returned to the Lot to write a novel and exorcise the terrors that have haunted him since childhood - since the event he witnessed at the Marsten House.

He finds the house has been rented by a newcomer, a man who causes Ben some unease. And then things start to happen: a child disappears, a dog is brutally killed - nothing unusual, except the list keeps growing...

A great peformance on one of King's classic novels

McLarty brings a deep, unsettling tone to this novel about a small town with a dark, supernatural secret. King's second novel, Ben Mears is a writer who returns to his quiet boyhood hometown to finish his next novel. Drawn from Bram Stoker's Dracula, King explores what would happen if Dracula arrived in 1970s America. A classic when published in the mid-1970s fans of the vampire genre will find limitations within the storyline, but overall, King expertly combines the supernatural larger than life terror of the supernatural with the mundane everyday security of a small town. McLarty's performance is fantastic and I would recommend this book to anyone looking to revisit a King classic.

A town brought to life

Stephen King and the narrator both do a fantastic job of bringing Salem’s Lot to life in a story that pulls no punches.

King's take on Stoker's classic

king tranposes dracula into modern 1970's america - though thats nearly 50 years ago now. king loses the romantiscm that made dracula and classic for a more literal story. now we are flooded with vampire mythos' but at the time such stories were more scarce. its quite refreshing to imagine vampires more true to the og dracula. it is only rices' that are perhaps on a par with the original.

king chooses for dracula to remain a monster with no apparent emotions or humanity. it is mortals that are heros. the post script ending tranforms a typical anticlimatic king ending into a finish worthy of the journey. ive made my way through perhaps half of kings catalogue and i would put this somewhere amongst the top third of his works.

Not One of King's Best

It seems to struggle at points, and it seems to lose its purpose at points. However, despite its flaws, it was entertaining and definitely worth a listen.

Pleasantly surprised

I chose this book not knowing it was a vampire story. If I didn’t pay for it, I would have just moved on. I am so glad I didn’t. I’ve also just learned there is a new movie coming out.

The narrator is very talented and brought these characters to life! My favourite Audio book hands down!

amazing as always

King's work is brilliant as always. The smallest details paint a picture of the world he has created, moving and changing with each word. The senses alight, feeling pure emotion, love, fear, disgust, and empathy. Couldn't stop listening to this one.

Classic King

The way Stephen King builds the world of Salem's Lot, the characters and the suspense is masterful. Highly recommended.

Better than I remember from when I first read it

Forgot how much research Stephen King does to make his fictional works seem like they are non-fiction....he makes the places and characters he introduces come alive somehow. A brilliant tale of horror set in a "dying" small town.
