About this listen

A gripping blend of family mystery, contemporary stories and the beautiful and bloody Viking tales, set against the starkly stunning landscape of Iceland.

Broadcaster Richard Fidler and author Kari Gíslason are good friends. They share a deep attachment to the sagas of Iceland - the true stories of the first Viking families who settled on that remote island in the Middle Ages.

These are tales of blood feuds, of dangerous women and people who are compelled to kill the ones they love the most. The sagas are among the greatest stories ever written, but the identity of their authors is largely unknown. Together, Richard and Kari travel across Iceland, to the places where the sagas unfolded a thousand years ago. They cross fields, streams and fjords to immerse themselves in the folklore of this fiercely beautiful island. And there is another mission: to resolve a longstanding family mystery - a gift from Kari's Icelandic father that might connect him to the greatest of the saga authors.

So fascinating!

Wow, I enjoyed this novel so much! Fidler and Gislason's non-fiction novel is part memoir, part history lesson that makes for one fascinating read. I was so intrigued by Fidler's wonderful portrayal of Icelandic history and how perfectly it is offset by Gislason's amazing story of discovering his past. A must read for any history fan.

Fascinating storytelling

The historical content is incredible, well balanced with a current adventure, anchored by a mystery to be solved.

Loved the shared narration. Excellent listen, would highly recommend.

Very interesting

I enjoyed listening to this one and it evokes a genuine interest in the nation - history and culture, of Iceland.
It’s intertwining of the personal tale of one of the narrator’s in with the historical sagas and back out again with more recent events worked.
The contrast in tone and pacing of the two narrators was a joy to listen to. It is one of those texts that I think would benefit from reading the print version whilst listening to the audio. I’d like to see the spelling of character names and the settings as well as hearing their pronunciation.
The text had me looking up pictures of the wild land that is Iceland, so different from my own on the other side of the world.

Great Story

Iceland has a mystical quality to many of us in the Southern Hemisphere. This book has enhanced that mystisism.

Very engaging

More like a radio season this book weaves its way through Kari’s life, Iceland history and culture, and the Sagas. It was an engaging tour? And I enjoyed each part of the whole.

Bloody brilliant

I had no idea the sagas were stories about real people. Like Richard, I had mistaken them for stories about mystical creatures.
This was a great book, and once again (like with Richard‘s other books) I found myself dreaming about the characters and Iceland and getting immersed in the stories, which are timeless.

Loved this

I loved this book. My husband and I have enjoyed Viking series on TV in recent years and it was great to hear the actual history that they had been based on.
The intertwining of Kari's life story and the tracing of his Icelandic family history with Richard was so interesting.
I highly recommend this book.
