Publisher's Summary

We’re told that if we care about our health - or our planet - eliminating red meat from our diets is crucial. That beef is bad for us and cattle farming is horrible for the environment. But science says otherwise.

Beef is framed as the most environmentally destructive and least healthy of meats. We’re often told that the only solution is to reduce or quit red meat entirely. But despite what anti-meat groups, vegan celebrities, and some health experts say, plant-based agriculture is far from a perfect solution. In Sacred Cow, registered dietitian Diana Rodgers and former research biochemist and New York Times best-selling author Robb Wolf explore the quandaries we face in raising and eating animals - focusing on the largest (and most maligned) of farmed animals, the cow.

Taking a critical look at the assumptions and misinformation about meat, Sacred Cow points out the flaws in our current food system and in the proposed “solutions”. Inside, Rodgers and Wolf reveal contrarian but science-based findings, such as:

  • Meat and animal fat are essential for our bodies
  • A sustainable food system cannot exist without animals
  • A vegan diet may destroy more life than sustainable cattle farming
  • Regenerative cattle ranching is one of our best tools at mitigating climate change

You’ll also find practical guidance on how to support sustainable farms and a 30-day challenge to help you transition to a healthful and conscientious diet. With scientific rigor, deep compassion, and wit, Rodgers and Wolf argue unequivocally that meat (done right) should have a place on the table.

It’s not the cow, it’s the how!

Amazing

A wonderful eye opening journey into how our world works and why we need to change our current path away from processed garbage foods. This book should be part of school curriculum to teach a better understanding of how the next generations can set things right. Until then I'll finish the grass fed steak I sourced from a local farm.

Vital Insight into Forgotten Knowledge

A potentially dry topic, made riveting by the narrator and the writing style. This is a must for understanding the function of our planet and what true sustainability looks like.

Great book

If only I could share it with my vegan friends. They would take it as a personal attack rather than that I care about their well being.

A must read for any ethical eater

This book takes on misinformation on 3 fronts. it opens the door to an assumed closed argument that plants are better for the environment and makes a very very strong case for regenerative farming and ethical meat.

A little biased but insightful

The authors are heavily biased towards meat consumption even suggesting we should eat more meat than we already do.

However, for anyone that has an open mind this book offers some interesting insight into sustainable food production. Rightfully so, it condones the mass production of heavily sprayed mono crops that are promoted as healthy and sustainable alternatives to humanely produced meat.

Wonderful. Thank you.

Well researched and excellent all around. Thank you, please keep doing what you’re doing. Only criticism - the narrator pronounces the word “suggestion” like it has a D in it. “SuDggestion”. Call me pedantic but given the job is to be a good speaker, this could have been improved.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK

Great book for anyone considering Veganism.

Consider why you want to go vegan, and use a balanced pro/con list.

Remember your health and understand the real earth impact -LISTEN to ALL points of view, , don't just accept what people tell you, do some research before blindly hopping on board the vegan train, because it has important implications.

Insightful & informative

Thoroughly researched and well explained. Takes an unpopular perspective on a very confusing and ideologically driven topic. Written in a very logical, calm and unbiased way. Encourages independent thought on the subject rather than an emotional reaction. Really great stuff - highly recommended. My only gripe is that the style of narration didn’t really suit this type of book. Never mind, still a great listen.

A must read!

Such an eye opening book about the misinformation spread about animals in our food system.
As someone who was convinced by the vegan doctrine but lost connection with it over time, it is very interesting and affirming to read this book. I hope more people open their mind to the possibility that things are not black and white as the media portrays.
