About this listen

Historical fiction novel of friendship and romance between two F-86 Sabre jet fighter pilots stationed in Korea during the Korean War. Inspired by real events. This is the third in an intended ordered series of four audiobooks.

If you’re a WWII aviation enthusiast and long for a sweet love story with two gay men, this one’s for you. And if those aren’t your preferred choices, then bravely dip your toes in the pond of "what if" and enjoy a great little gem on which to expand your horizons.

First, this is a love story between two courageous, talented, daring young pilots, serving their country in the midst of a staggering global war. Supporting each other through bombing raids, risky flight maneuvers, perilous escapes, war injuries, and combat fatigue. It’s also not written in the typical style or prose of a gay romance novel.

Secondly, this is a highly-esteemed salute to the accomplishments of WWII aviators, as well as the rapid advances in aeronautics and innovative technologies of the time. Flight descriptions showcase the bravery, tenacity, and quick thinking skills of the pilots as they outmaneuver the enemy.

Thirdly, this series pays homage to Dr. John Paul Spiegel, a psychiatrist in the US Medical Corps, who in real life was an expert on violence and combat stress. His rejection of assumed mental disease in homosexuality, his compassion, and independent thinking led to a watershed moment in psychiatry.

In 1973, led by Dr. Spiegel, the American Psychiatric Association changed the definition of homosexuality, no longer viewing it as sexual deviance and pathological. Further, later that year the APA removed homosexuality as a disease, now determining it to be a natural human condition.

With Lightning Wingman and Mustang Wingman, the blending of real life people and events with fictional characters occurs so smoothly.
