About this listen

In 1965, five teenage friends fled Glasgow for London to pursue their dream of musical stardom. Yet before year's end three returned, and returned damaged. In 2015, a brutal murder forces those three men, now in their 60s, to journey back to London and finally confront the dark truth they have run from for five decades.

Runaway is a crime novel covering 50 years of friendships solidified and severed, dreams shared and shattered and passions lit and extinguished, set against the backdrop of two unique and contrasting cities at two unique and contrasting periods of recent history.

Beautiful, funny, sad - brilliant.

Peter May - what can I say? This and the Lewis Trilogy are such beautiful prose. Even when he is describing the mundane his words are such a pleasure to listen to and always evocative of whatever he is writing about. Runaway is a great story and May manages to tell it with empathy and insight into his elderly characters as he did in 'The Lewis Man'. I found it very moving at times as well as funny and sad. The reader, Peter Forbes, is exceptional, managing to make every character distinct and doing an outstanding job of capturing the reader. I could envisage every bit of this book and could not bear to stop listening. Can't wait for Peter May's next book.

Too slow moving for me

The story was long and drawn out. And the climax - if you can call it that - was uninspiring.

But the performance was excellent.

Definitely not the Mr May’s finest. Several of his other books are better and I chose this because I had enjoyed the others.
