About this listen
Grieving the death of his partner, Theo Bosco has no room in his life for distractions. Though his instincts scream that he should avoid Juliet "Jules" Jackson, he can't seem to stay away. It doesn't help that Theo's new K9 companion has fallen head over paws with Jules's rambunctious family.
Or that when he's with her, Theo finally knows peace.
When Jules rescued her siblings, whisking them away to the safety of the beautifully rugged Colorado Rockies, she never expected to catch the eye - or the heart - of a cop. Yet as Jules struggles to fight her growing attraction to the brooding K9 officer, another threat lurks much closer to home...
And this time, there's no escape.

Narrator takes a bit to like
Good storyline, enjoyable character development.
Narrator does ok until the 1st time she stutters as the character Sam. It takes some getting used to. Almost didn't finish the book because it was.so jarring. As the series goes along you get used to the stutter she uses when narrating Sam's dialogue. If you can get past the stutter, it's an easier listen

a story that needed more
Katie, you know how to drag it out
the ruminating over options drove me nuts. I got nothing but innuendo behind the reason regarding why the h had a secret. and the H went from grumpy to happy pretty quick.
also the threats of bombs being a constant in the town and how the police reacted, for me felt rather blase.
there were pretty gut-wrenching problems outlined in the plotline, and it seemed to skim over the emotional pull I'd expected and just kept repeating all the ideas and options in the characters' heads.
I like k9 stories. However, a bit more research needed to be done in this department, and some deeper emotional grit would have changed the whole tone . I didn't get who the culprit was until right at the end, and I thought it was cleverly written, then, for an intense situation, it was a long, over and over, dragged out time of suspense.
I did think that the crisis near the end would have compounded with the H's problems. But it didn't seem to come in to play.
I was surprised that a cop would simply accept a secret and move on.
one reviewer said that because of this, the novel was a frustrating letdown, but I continued to try the book as I didn't pay for it. I definitely wanted to like it but struggled.
it's much like a cliffhanger in regard to some loose ends still dangling, but as I got insight into book 2, I'm thinking this secret will continue its roll through the series. how far leaves yo be listened
on a quick note, I'm listening to this in 2023.. the cons chosen in this book are awfully close to reality
Callie, I have listened to before, and I like her narration, but I do think male/female voices could have gone a long way to helping this story

yawn
listened to the first four chapters and the FMC is just silly, can't get myself to care about someone who doesn't bother to engage her brain. Maybe it improves and her character has a revelation, but I decided life is too short.
