About this listen

The remarkable true story of a family forced into hiding after leaking Russian secrets

What started out as a great adventure turned into a terrifying nightmare when Nick Stride and his family were forced to flee for their lives from one of the richest, most powerful men in the world.

Nick moved to Russia in 1998 to help build the British Embassy in Moscow, but ended up on the run with his wife and two children after leaking secrets from Vladimir Putin’s one-time deputy. Hiding off grid on Australia’s final frontier—remote beaches on the Dampier Peninsula on the far north Kimberley coast—the family faced crocodiles, sharks, snakes, raging bushfires and the devastating Cyclone Yvette, and survived only by catching fish and crabs and learning how to kill wild animals. It was a life-or-death move, but Nick felt he had no choice. Now, emerging from isolation, the family are finally ready to share their incredible story.

Incredible Story

What an incredible true story, so well written and narrated by the author, about the plight of a family fleeing from the Russians and then the Australian Government, who refused them asylum. This forced them into hiding in the outback of Western Australia. My heart went out to them having to endure such fear and hardship as they tried to survive in unbelievable difficult circumstances. As an Australian I am embarrassed by the treatment they received and lack of support and empathy by the Australian Immigration Department and the relevant ministers that they appealed to for help. They must have been so desperate and the toll enormous. It was, however, a real adventure and a great read

Amazing Story of a Family on the Run in Australia

This is a captivating story of the trials and triumphs of a British/Russian family on the run from Australian Immigration and Russian spies. The frustration they endured and the resourcefulness of the family are inspiring. In truth, I have always had a fantasy of hiding out from authorities in the bush.

As well as a ripping story, the hardship this family were forced to endure made me angry. The heartlessness and cruelty of Australia's immigration system are starkly drawn (I am an Australian and this is no surprise to us). The description of life in Putin's Russia in the first part of the book are also interesting.

The author makes liberal and effective use of quotes from the members of the family and their friends. I felt their fear and concern for one another. This is a unique true story, and I highly recommend this book.

Wow what a great book

I really enjoyed this book. Can’t believe it was a true story. It shows how tough and unfair Australia’s immigration policies are. Thank God NZ are so much more compassionate.
