Han hedder Skord og han kommer fra skoven. Er han et menneske? Næppe. Nogle bruger et andet ord, et ord han ikke kan lide. Han vandrer langt i løbet af sit liv, ser andre lande og folk. Men han vender altid tilbage til skoven under Skulebjerget. I lange tider hører han til røverbanden. Han lever hurtigt og somme tider ondt, og han kommer meget galt af sted. Stiger braser sammen, lynet slår ned, huse brænder. Skord bliver hængt op i den ene fod med hovedet nedad. Der eksisterer to slags eventyr, siger han selv. Han påstår at han bedst kan lide den anden og mere tankevækkende slags, den der foregår i åndens og tankens verden. Han påstår også at han har lavet guld. Og til Xenia, den bortførte og bittert fremmede, siger han: - Jeg vil hellere dø end skilles fra dig. Da har han fået en sjæl.
