About this listen

Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel, Ringworld remains a favorite among science fiction readers and listeners.

The artifact is a vast circular ribbon of matter, some 180 million miles across, with a sun at its center. Pierson’s puppeteers—strange, three-legged, two-headed aliens—discovered this “Ringworld” in a hitherto unexplored part of the galaxy. Curious about the immense structure, but frightened by the prospect of meeting the builders, they set about assembling a team to explore it:

Louis Wu, human—old and bored with having lived too fully for too many years, seeking an adventure, and all too capable of handling it.

Nessus, puppeteer—a trembling coward from a species with an inbuilt survival pattern of nonviolence. This particular puppeteer, however, is insane.

Speaker-to-Animals, kzin—large, orange-furred, and carnivorous. The kzin are one of the most savage life-forms known.

The party’s expedition, however, goes disastrously wrong when their ship crash-lands and its motley crew faces a daunting trek across thousands of miles of Ringworld territory.

Solid plot but a product of its time.

Great plot but in 2024 the tone towards women is very dated and demeaning also in hindsight some references to technology such as tape recordings, are a bit unimaginative considering the story is set in the distant future.

Amazing

Great story. Even after 45+ years it is still relevant. A must read from sifi fans

A Good Story

I read the book many years ago and loved it, I was happy when I found it as a audio book and could revisit a world I got lost in all those years ago.

I will be listening to the next one

A true adventure

Many aspects of the story are a sign of the time in which it was written, so some readers may take pause especially concerning the attitudes towards gender. That said, there is no explicit abuse - mostly only old thinking and ways of storytelling. At the least, this feminist was able to squint past the fog and enjoy the story. With that out of the way, it must be said that nobody builds a world quite like Niven. If you are looking for a true, gripping adventure with rounded characters and the delights of space travel, I cannot recommend Ringworld highly enough.

Good narration but difficult to visualise

I do love old sci-fi adventure discovery style books so managed to stick with it. The description of the settings, machines and places was not very clear so my imagination had to fill in many blanks. Good narration however the story and plot seemed a bit random.
