About this listen
This definitive biography of Vince McMahon, former WWE chairman and CEO, is “riveting, essential reading” (Rick Perlstein, New York Times bestselling author) as it charts his rise from rural poverty to the throne of one of the world’s most influential media empires. Featuring exclusive interviews with more than 150 people who witnessed, aided, and suffered from his ascent.
Even if you’ve never watched a minute of professional wrestling, you are living in Vince McMahon’s world.
In his four decades as the defining figure of American pro wrestling, McMahon was the man behind Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, John Cena, Dave Bautista, Bret “The Hitman” Hart, and Hulk Hogan, to name just a few of the mega-stars who owe him their careers. For more than twenty-five years, he has also been a performer in his own show, acting as the diabolical “Mr. McMahon”—a figure who may have more in common with the real Vince than he would care to admit.
Just as importantly, McMahon is one of Donald Trump’s closest friends—and Trump’s experiences as a performer in McMahon’s programming were, in many ways, a dress rehearsal for the 45th President’s campaigns and presidency. McMahon and his wife, Linda, are major Republican donors. Linda was in Trump’s cabinet. McMahon makes deals with the Saudi government worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And for generations of people who have watched wrestling, he has been a defining cultural force and has helped foment “the worst of contemporary politics” (Kirkus Reviews).
Ringmaster built on exclusive interviews with more than 150 people, from McMahon’s childhood friends to those who accuse him of destroying their lives. “Smart, entertaining, impressively reported, and beautifully written. Wrestling fans will devour it, but everyone who wants to better understand this crazy country and one of its truly original characters ought to read it” (Jonathan Eig, author of Ali: A Life).

"Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America" Audiobook
Ringmaster is a deep dive into the life of Vince McMahon, the former WWE chairman and CEO, exploring his journey from a tough childhood to becoming one of the most powerful figures in media. The book also touches on his impact on American culture, featuring exclusive interviews with over 150 people who were part of his rise to the top. Whether you’re a wrestling fan or not, it’s hard to deny McMahon’s influence—not just in entertainment, but also in the political world, given his close ties with Donald Trump.
The first half of the book was compelling, giving insight into McMahon’s complex personality and the forces that shaped him. I appreciated the well-researched nature of this biography, especially the new perspectives offered from those who experienced his rise firsthand. However, the second half dragged for me. It shifted focus to recounting various WWE storylines and plots, which felt repetitive and not nearly as engaging. If you're not a wrestling diehard, this part can be a slog.
There’s a lot of overlap with the recent Mr. McMahon documentary, so if you’ve watched that, you might not find much new material here. While Ringmaster is a solid read (or listen), it doesn’t bring much fresh insight for those already familiar with Vince McMahon’s story. Longtime wrestling fans will recognize most of the tales shared, making the book feel more like a rehash than a revelation.
Overall, it’s a well-researched, informative biography, but it may leave some readers wanting more depth or new information. If you're already steeped in McMahon’s legacy, this audiobook might not add much to what you already know.

Some stuff I didn’t know about this very odd form of performance art. VKM was certainly a visionary and also a man with many flaws,
This book could even have a sequel just from the most recent events.

Scratched the surface
I was a bit disappointed in the overall storyline. It concentrated a lot on what we saw in the ring and just touched on the goings on behind the curtain. Thought the narrator was very good though.

Vince’s incredible story, told unnecessarily politically.
Amazing story, with the writers political views unnecessarily jammed in time and time again. Summed up in “Vince bad, Trump bad”

A list of grievances from a moral high horse
This more like a history of everything Vince and the WWE did wrong or are accused of doing wrong told breathlessly and imposing 2033 moral norms on everything. The worst part is whole hours of the book are just describing the worst moments of raw. Nothing new or interesting. Who is this book for?
