Publisher's Summary

Noah Bradford knows secrets that could get him killed, and staying in WITSEC seems like a good plan. What he didn't plan on is losing his heart to a man who is sworn to protect him.

Battle scarred US Marshal Robert "Mac" Mackenzie has a job to do, and guaranteeing the safety of Noah Bradford is at the top of that list. Mac will do whatever it takes to keep Noah safe, even if it means walking away.

Mac and Noah, brought together during extreme circumstances, have been separated by evil. It's been six years, give or take, and Noah is coming for vengeance against the men who killed his mother. He's on a collision course with Mac, who has no idea of the man Noah has become. Sparks fly and the heat sizzles when these two powerful men are reunited, but will they survive the passion the past created?

Action / law-enforcement / second-chances romance!

17 yo Noah is being groomed to take over a drug empire by a violent and abusive drug lord. When the compound is raided by the Feds and the US Marshals, Noah is rescued by 26 yo US Marshall Robert “Mac” Mackenzie. Noah doesn’t know whether to trust Mac, but during WITSEC the two become close until Mac applies for a new role. Years later, Noah is working as a deadly assassin with the shadowy quasi-govt group, Phoenix, when their paths cross again. Can they make it work this time?

The opening chapters of this law-enforcement / secret agent romance were so powerful and thrilling—absolutely fabulous writing, especially for a debut author! There’s a second-chances feel to this—even though Mac is careful not to act on his feelings for Noah during WITSEC—and that trope always makes me sad about the couple’s lost time. My big question was why the drug lord had picked Noah to groom and the author leaves us hanging for the longest time before the satisfying big reveal. It’s a strong start to a new series with some nice action, a few twists and turns, and two battered guys you are rooting for. 🎧 US veteran voice actor Tristan James is always at his best in law enforcement stories like this and he does a great job here (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!

Good first book - enjoyable.

Slow burn, lovable MCs and an introduction to a large cast to set up the next books.
