Jack LaLanne
About this listen
Jack LaLanne, the foremost pioneer of the American fitness movement, reveals his secrets to a better life and longevity. This complete revision of Revitalize Your Life includes a chapter on juicing, as well as how to improve your looks, health, and sex life. The Jack LaLanne Show was the very first and the longest-running television exercise program. LaLanne presented fitness and exercise advice on television for 34 years.
This book opens with a brief Jack LaLanne biography and ends with a chapter featuring feats of strength he performed throughout his life.
He led the way for a long list of TV fitness gurus like Denise Austin, who co-hosted the Jack LaLanne show in 1981. More followed, such as Jake Steinfeld, known as Body by Jake, Suzanne Somers, Richard Simmons, Jillian Michaels, Susan Powter, and the 20-minute workout models. Besides television, Jack LaLanne is chiefly responsible for many firsts in the fitness industry. He was the first to develop several types of equipment, including the leg extension machine, the weight selector machine, and machines with cables and pulleys.
LaLanne was at the forefront of many radical movements, including women working out with weights, seniors working out with weights, and athletes working out with weights.
Perhaps none of LaLanne's firsts is more important than his creation of what we believe to be the first health club in the United States. Jack LaLanne's Physical Culture Studio opened in 1936. His TV program was unique in that Jack featured exercises anyone can do around the home or office using everyday items instead of expensive gym equipment. Exercises using a chair to lean on, a simple bathroom towel, a bottle of water, or a book. We will describe many of these exercises in this book. Your imagination is your tv screen or device monitor. Jack’s words telling how it’s done is just as powerful as it was on that small TV screen back in the 50s.
Also, at the end of these chapters, we have a special treat. Millions watched Jack LaLanne throughout his life perform lots of strong man feats of strength, such as swimming across different harbors while towing boats loaded with passengers. He did these feats well into his 70s. In fact, at age 70, Jack LaLanne single handedly pulled 70 boats, with 70 people, in his victorious swimming feat. On his 88th birthday, he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
